FLEAS!!!

OMG I am so sick of this!!! The fleas have been horrid this year and I cannot seem to win. I have done rounds of Frontline, Sentry & Advantix, Flea baths, Dawn baths and capstar. We’re not winning and the dogs are not happy. (Who can blame them)

IS there anything to do? We’re stuck inside for the hurricane and the constant scratching, licking and biting is driving me nuts.

We washed and hot air dried all the beds. Treated the carpets etc. Short of bombing the house (which we can’t do today) I am out of ideas.

We have 6 dogs and 17 cats living in Florida, all in the house. Trifexis for the dogs and revolution for the cats, have seen nary a flea.

One dog has to be crated for an hour after the Trifexis or she’ll vomit…but considering what the flea situation was before doing this we’ll take it.

We cannot bomb the house or spray the yard because we raise parrots and spray/bomb stuff would kill them.

I second the trifexis, even though Riley gets sick on it. I treat him, and I dont have to treat the indoor kitteh.

I bathe the dog with a neem oil, tea tree, patchouli, rosemary essential oil shampoo my friend makes for me.

I’m a big fan of Revolution. As an added bonus, it actually gets into the hairs and the shedded hairs have flea repellant properties to them. So fleas are even discouraged from being in the house and yard (or wherever else your dogs are shedding).

I also use Trifexis for the dog and Revolution for the cats,plus clean and vacuum regularly to get any others…and this year, none of that has even TOUCHED the fleas. We’ve added flea baths, flea sprays, flea collars, and dusting the animals and the house (inside and out) with diatomaceous earth, and none of it has done a thing. I’m hoping a few hard frosts will help…

The dogs are on Comfortis, kind of pricey but it friggin ROCKS. If a flea jumps on them, it dies within several minutes. We had a battle with the fleas inside about a month ago, couldn’t keep the outdoor kitty from sneaking in the door when we came inside. The only thing that worked was Adams carpet powder. The fleas were so bad, you could walk from one side of the room to the other, then bend down and pick off several fleas from your ankles After one use, those suckers were gone.

The label says to leave the powder out for at least half an hour before vacuuming it up, and after that it is technically safe to walk around on. So that might be an option for you guys on house arrest?
Warning, though. It REEKS of Fruity Pebbles. In a bad way.

We do it all - have used Confortis and now use Trifexis on the 4 dogs. Advantage on the cats. Frontline does not work AT ALL anymore and our vet said everyone is saying that. Siphitrol spray for the house - sprayed today and will again in 7 to 10 days to catch the second wave. No matter what I do, we always end up with flea issues. I think treating the lawn would help - will try that next. The dogs bring them in and the indoor cats get loaded even though I treat them regularly. Had to treat the dogs early with topical (per vet) because the Trifexis is just not holding for the month. Right now the house is loaded and the dogs and cats and humans are miserable. Good news is I sprayed and retreated, so should be better tomorrow. Already less scratching tonight… I HATE fleas!

Another one in the Comfortis camp. Used all the topicals over the years, Advantage, Frontline, Advantix II (which burned a little patch of hair off my little poodle’s neck). Fleas can hide forever in curly poodle hair.

My groomers begged me to try Comfortis and I did.

Dosed them with Comfortis in May and in July and have not seen a flea since.

I live in the very damp and very warm Southeast. The bugs in general have been terrible this year.
