Any reply to my question on 9.50 for 40# bales? Just wanted to know if that is a fair price or am I panic buying thinking I may not have enough hay for the time I am in FL???

That may be a little high. I prefer to buy where the hay is weighed and sold by weight. I’ve found most places the hay weight is always a bit light. Some places more than others.
I buy all over the Ocala area depending on who has what. Right now I am paying $15.60 for gorgeous timothy that is #85 and weighed as you buy it. So you are def getting what you pay for.
Hay is such a rip off…I’m totally sick of it:mad:
WOW. And I get concerned when I’m paying $3 instead of $2.50!!! and That’s for top quality second cut! I guess people should talk about a big indoor circuit in Ontario!
Cant -re: Where in Ocala did u get the good timothy? I was at Berratini on Fri and got some heavy t&A. Their O&A was wonderful!!!

i am in sumterville, central florida 45 min. from ocala, orlando & tampa
i got:
compressed alfalfa 12.50 -14.00 per bale
T&A, pretty “stemmy” 11.00 per bale
coastal 6.50 a bale (clean & pretty)
for those of you in Ocala got to LARSEN’S its on 40 on the rigyht if your headed west towards HITS from 75.
there is also a dumpy little place, but great prices & nice hay. from 75 head west on 27 (towards hits again). go LEFT onto 60th like your heading towards OBS, its on the right. small dupy place for sure- but nice guy great prices, nice hay
Since I have about 50 horses here, I cannot afford to buy individual bales at the feed store. Until this year, we were able to produce enough hay for our own use, but it was a bad hay year.
I have resorted to using a hay source that I had used when I was in Texas. So far, I have brought in 3 semi loads of hay from Kansas - one straight Timothy, one of Orchard/alfalfa and one of orchard/brome. I plan to bring another orchard/alfalfa. If I can help any of my neighbors, let me know. I am in Ocala, down the road from HITS. My hay barn is not 2/3 full, so I am going to keep going until it is brimming!

Just paid $12.99 for Canadian T/A at Horstmeyers in Sanford. Really nice quality and big bales.
One of our pony clubbers in the region owns a hay store in Ocala, called Martin’s hay. I saw some of her hay last month that she brought to a pc clinic and it was really nice. When we head up to Ocala in 10 days for Imps surgery, I plan on making a hay run since I will be there for 2 days.
In Ocala we were paying $12-14 a bale for T/A. We were getting big 400lb T/A squares for $70 I believe, and $700 O/A [GORGEOUS HAY] for $100.
c expresso- where in Ocala did you get the large squares?
There are 2 hay places at the intersection of 326 and 27, United Hay sales, and then also right next door to that, is another hay place [it is slightly more discrete though]. We got out small bales at Rick’s, near Tack Shack, and also the Southern States at the intersection of 27 and 326 has hay but it is pricier.

I usually get hay at OBS near Tack Shack. They have a great selection and very nice quality hay. They usually have 3 string and 2 string bales of alfalfa and timothy, as well as t/a mixed bales.
I have been to United Hay, Larsons, and Seven Day Hay near the airport (near Winning Edge) and OBS has by far, the best quality I have found. I have found their horse supplies to be well priced too.
We get our coastal and tifton locally, and it’s really good hay at a justified price, buy 500 bales at a time…People ask me all the time but he won’t sell to new people…
Larsens has good hay, we get alfalfa and orchard mix…Not a fan of their T&A, haven’t had much luck with it down here…Also like Rick’s when Larsen’s has run out of hay and/or I’m short on money.
Yet my father still sells his alfalfa in Wisconsin for $3.50. Why did I move down here again? Oh yeah, the weather.
anyone know any were to get good hay, round or square bales, and or big blocks of well, anything around Sarasota??

Right now in Wellington it’s available, and pricey, but no more so than usual I don’t think. It usually becomes less available as winter goes on and shipping gets dicey. The quality is starting to go a bit already. We started off with 70# t/a for $18, but the second shipment of that was too light we went to look at it so we went to 70# straight alfalfa for $19. Our most recent load of that wasn’t as good as the first load, which was beautiful, but is still decent. Basically, you need to go look each time before you order, since no shipment is the same even if it’s labeled the same hay. Last year the quality ran out on the two string alfalfa and we had to go to the three string by the end of circuit. At one point we were feeding condensed. This year there is no three string available from where we purchase, at least at this time. I do spend a lot of time walking through the warehouses, and the feed stores, especially Gold Coast, are all very helpful and pleasant. They try hard to get you what you want.
If you can bring it and store it, do so, but we have no place to store a workable quantity and most people I think are in the same boat.
