Hello, I have an gaited 11 year old that has fluid in both hind hocks. He is not taking a bad step and no signs of lameness. I have not cantered him as of yet, as I think it is hard for him. I have only done a short canter.
He is fine with his gait, walk etc. One Vet recommended draining the fluid and then giving hock injections. Another vet suggested giving him rest and treating with Adaquin and Ledgend. My question to the group is would you drain the hocks, or just leave them alone. He must be experiencing discomfort. I have an appt with a vet who will be doing an Ultrasound to try to see what is in the fluid. I.E. blood, bone chip etc? Has anyone experienced this ? What is the outcome?
Thank you
Sounds like Bog Spavin. There’s a lot of good info online if you google it.
it doesn’t always have lameness. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Thank you, hopefully there is a supplement/ treatment to reduce the fluid without draining Hopefully, we will find the cause.
We drained the fluid in the hock and also did injections. Some fluid has come back. Cause could be alot of going down steep hills, overuse. Per the vet.
That would have been the route I took.
I assume it was an over abundance of fluid made by the upper joint?
Did the injections help? I assume they would have since putting a needle in the joint would allow all that excess fluid to release.
Yes, oh my gosh he is a new horse. Smooth as silk riding him and his gaits are incredible. Poor guy, they are filling up again with fluid but nothing compared to what they looked like. The vet will be out again for an ultrasound and advise if i should keep draining. We must of taking 50 CC’s of fluid out of that one joint. It was like a small ball. I will try to attach a photo at some point.
Awww poor guy! Probably need to xray or ultrasound at this point to see what’s going on. How long ago did you inject the hocks?
