Fly control- Use of metered sprayer like country vet?

Hi All,
I prefer natural fly control methods but the flies are so bad this year I am considering use of metered sprayer.
Yes I have tried fly predators but my next door neighbors, who have several horses, won’t use them so it doesn’t work well.
I fly spray my horse daily but that certainly doesn’t last all day.
I have not tried a feed through but again the neighbors flies would still be a problem.

something like this…

it sprays every 15 minutes.

Anyone use something like this?
I am concerned if I use it for stall it would get into the horses hay (which could be moved outside) but she has an automatic waterer in her stall and not sure how much insecticide could get in her water.
Not to mention what she or humans might inhale.
Do folks normally install these out of the stall?

I also don’t know effect of this on the environment in general. I live in CA and some of the refill products cannot be shipped here due to our environmental laws. Like this one

It would be nice if I could rig up some sort of automatic sprayer that I could fill with less toxic blend. Completely natural (if that would work) or at least minimal pesticide. But not sure how I would do this.

Thanks for any feedback

we have used products that are similar to what you posted (if not the same item?) but had limited effect as our barns in the summer have pretty good ventilation. We had those in a remote barn but since expanded our overhead system to that barn

We do have a Pyranha Spray Master misting system that we can set the spray times and duration of the misting …this system works very well for us… have seen at least 95% to 99% reduction in flies … we now use the one system for two barns, it is rated up to 80 stalls

I see that the Pyranha products are sold throughout California, the spray concentrate uses Pyrethrin that is expressed from the Chrysanthemum plant as the bases for the mix

I used those metered battery operated sprayers before I bought a Pyranha system. I used one sprayer per stall except for the messy horse - she had two. It worked better than not having them but not as good as the Pyranha fly system. I could always tell they were helping because when a can ran out of spray the flies got worse.

Agree with @SusanO. When I had a larger barn I installed a Pyranha system. It was amazing. No flies at all and I only ran it twice a day. My current barn is just two stalls and a nice wide aisle. I have three of the Country Vet, one in each stall and one over the aisle double slider door. They do a nice job. Not entirely fly free like the Pyranha but pretty close. One complaint would be mine are on year three and over the last month aren’t spraying as strongly. I changed out all the batteries and no better so I’m thinking they are going to be “end of life” this year. And, I could not find refills this season (Country Vet or any other compatible) until a few weeks ago. Thankfully I had some from last year to get me through. That’s not been an issue in the past so thinking “supply chain” as nowhere online or locally had them. I still can’t find the mosquito version I typically use (yellow label) but the cheaper red label seem to be working fine on the flies.

I use the country vet metered sprayer in each stall and a few down the aisle of my barn. They make a big difference in my small (40x40) barn, probably wouldn’t be as effective in a larger barn. I hang hay nets in the back corner and water buckets on the front wall next to the doors and place the sprayer in the middle of the stall. The mist doesn’t come close to their hay or water with this set up.

FYI You can buy the Glade Automatic Air Freshener sprayers on Amazon for a fraction of the cost of the country vet sprayers, I have several and they work just the same

If you use the Glade sprayer, I suggest you somehow attach it to the wall or ledge. I have found mine on the stall floor… birds, mice, friendly rat snake, someone knocks it off the beam.

Have you tried upping the amount of predators you put out?

I had the country sprayer that I used for years, it’s moderately effective, nothing like the piranha system, obviously but I lease a property so I’m not going to invest in something like that for not my property.

When the sprayer finally died I just got something that was vaguely compatible off of Amazon used for air freshener, and it works just fine
