So we are in SW Fla, so hot and wet and buggy anyway. We have a herd of cows that lives along one side of our property. He does pick his fields but he doesnt mow. We keep our barn very clean but the flies are getting quite bad. We have Qick Strike Bars, stinky traps (away from the barn), Quik Bayt, etc. Any other control methods we are missing. Oh and manure is put in a bin away form the barn also.
Also, there is an old fly spray system in the barn, but the motor is long dead. Has anyone ever resurrected one? Or do you think the whole thing will have to be replaced
Fly predators.
If you figure it out, let me know. We haven’t had a problem with bots in 4 years. The neighbors got two cows, and all of a sudden they are out. Of. Control. I’m tired of scraping my horses legs raw.
the bots were terrible in Mo last year too. Havent seen any of those down here
every thing piece is available…
The system you have just google it for a parts break down such as this
Fly predators are great …unless you are in the midst of livestock properties that don’t use them.
I use fly predators and a fly spray system, manure pile is away from the barn, etc. But there are lots of horsey neighbors who don’t do any of the above, and there are a couple of herds of cattle down the road, so I’m screwed.
Certain times of the year are horrible, like right now, when the flies cling to all the doors trying to get in.
The face flies are horrible. I have a neighbor (same one with a former-wandering hybrid dog of some sort and the improperly installed e-fence) who got cows and horses last year before my house was built, and has now acquired pigs, chickens and roosters, ducks, geese, llamas or alpacas, and god knows what else. Regular zoo. No manure management or mowing. I was thinking I could get fly predators, just more than I needed and release them close to the property line??
Predators do work, but if you manure is hauled away like ours, so are your predators. Jenners it sounds like predators would help you a lot!
I’m in the same position. Our neighbor raises cows, and we have issues with adult flies. Lots of them. I thought about using fly predators, but the flies are primarily coming from the neighbor, so unless I want to hop the fence and dump them on the cow poo, doesn’t do much good. We just do our best, mostly make sure the horses pens are cleaned early every day in the summer, poop is hauled out/away from the barn. Fly spray, masks, etc. etc. My older gelding gets horrible face flies, I use ‘Swat’ on his nose where the fly mask doesn’t cover, works wonders.
