Fly mask vs Fly veil with fringe

Anyone use a fly veil with the long fringe instead of a fly mask? I tried a fly mask on my horse and he was sweaty under it and when he rolled the dirt compacted into the mesh, so I gave up because I’m not there every day to clean and wash the mask.

I never see people use these - any downsides?

I was thinking of this one:

It has a velcro attachment with elastic. Seems like it would do the job keeping flies out of his eyes without him getting all sweaty or having embedded dirt held next to his face.

I tried one of those that had mesh ears as well, and I found it didn’t stay on well at all. Either got rubbed off entirely, or pushed back behind my guy’s ears. You’re better off using a breakaway halter with a fly fringe browband.

The other option is one of the “bee keeper hood” style Rambo flymasks, with the stiff bit that holds the mesh far away from the eyes.

I used the type Ceylon Star recommended when my young Arabian was going through a stage of having really prominent eyes–his eyelashes* were getting caught in the regular mesh masks & he was uncomfortable about it. The fringe did work to keep flies away. I still have the thing somewhere, but he finally grew into his adult form and I went back to the regular fly masks, thinking that they offered more protection.

*He has double eyelashes. Too bad they aren’t curly.
