One of the horses at my farm has the BIGGEST shark fin I have ever seen. I’m not exaggerating, it is massive. As such, blankets rub him. We’ve mostly figured out how to blanket him to avoid rubs when it’s cold out, but summer is horrible.
He HATES bugs. We got him a fly sheet with an extenda neck, thinking it wiggle reduce rubbing. It doesn’t. His withers are rubbed and painful. His mom has tried sewing slippery material into the wither of the fly sheet, and padding. It doesn’t work.
Any ideas on fly sheets to that won’t rub?
Schneider’s Saddlery has a mosquito mesh VTEK wither relief sheet that friends have used on their shark finned horses with good results.
I’ve used Weatherbeeta on TBs with withers and they usually fit well. I’ve got my gelding in the Weatherbeeta Duramesh sheet with neck (not sure if they make that model any more, but it’s the heavy, plastic-y material) and he doesn’t rub at all.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I have a Cashel Crusader Lightweight Fly Sheet that does not touch my horse’s withers at all - it’s weird. The entire wither area is 2" above his wither. I suspect due to curvature of the back seam? Anyway. Try that one!
I have the Shires Fine Mesh with necks for my two OTTB’s and it works great!!! They both live in theirs 24/7 unless it’s 90+ with humidity. No rubs or mane loss!
