Fly sheets for UV protection

Do fly sheets protect from fading? Certain kinds?

My new horse is solid black and I’d like to keep her fly free as well as protect against fading. She goes out during the day which is the only option at my barn. I’m looking for something cool, as I live in Indiana and it can get into the 90s with high humidity. I’m also looking for something durable as she goes out in a herd.

Thanks!

I found a good price on one of these

I use a Rambo Protector on my black horse. He’s turned out all day and he wears it every day of the year that he isn’t in a blanket - it’s kept him a beautiful ebony color. It’s not very humid where we live but he has never seemed at all hot under it - to the contrary, it seems to keep him cooler. However, after a year it just might be losing some of its UV coating and I’m looking into having it retouched. It helps to not bodyclip (if you can get away with it) and to use a sunscreen spray (QuicScreen, for example) as well once a week. Make sure you always rinse sweat off after a ride, too.

Unfortunately some of the fading is due to the urea & salt in sweat. Depending on the horse, there is only so much you can do.

In really liked the Schneider’s mosquito mesh sheet last year on my dark horse. I think it actually kept her cooler b.c of the light color, and has great air flow. I don’t think it helped with fading, though. :frowning:
