Fly sheets

I have the professional choice comfort fit fly sheet. It is a lovely sheet he looks very good in The charcoal colour really suits him. The Only issue is it got a rip after minimal use so I was thinking a new sheet. Has anyone tried the professional choice theramic fly sheet: https://profchoice.com/i-23902391-theramic-fly-sheet.html? Main concern is him not getting too hot. The other sheet I like is the Schneider high neck https://www.sstack.com/dura-tech-mid-neck-soft-interlock-fly-sheet/p/42112/ I like the neck cut but would prefer silver over white and a belly band would be optimal. Any opinions would be appreciated. The other fly sheet I was curious about was the turtle, but it just looks like an average sheet to me.

Please help me decide. Ideally, I would leave him naked, but he does hate those pesky bugs always a dilemma.

Thank you in advance!

Have you looked at the Cool Coat? (Kool Coat?). Designed in Australia. We have a white horse here that has to wear a blanket in the summer, and I found this sheet to keep her much cooler than any mesh sheet.

I haven’t tried the cool sheets, but have considered trying one. It’s always the dilemma to keep him naked or put a sheet on him because he likes to be without a sheet, but at the same time he absolutely hates bugs and get hives. Where I live the bugs aren’t terribly bad, but sometimes they can be. I would mostly put the sheet on at night unless the bugs really bad, it’s sometimes hard to judge though. He also hates the midgets which come out come at dawn and dusk. We also live near the water.

I think the Cool coats are less annoying than fly sheets for the horse, as the hair doesn’t get pulled/stuck in the weave, but you would probably need a belly band added to one for fuller coverage.

Have you used the Kool Coats on clipped horses? I have two who are PPID that I clip in the summer. I’m looking for something slick that doesn’t catch on clipped hair. Thank you!

They aren’t “slick” but they don’t catch. The horse that wears it is a white horse: her hair is greasy, and it does well on her. It is just a very light weight, but somewhat stiff material so it sits lightly on their back. I think the shoulder is lined? I am failing to think of a common material to compare it to…a stiff cotton man’s shirt?

Fighting hives with my guy right now from flies. It’s awful.

I love the bug buster type sheets that are impregnated with fly repellant. I bought a Rambo last year for my pony who deals with sweet itch and it was a game changer. Actually strong enough to not rip (important since he lives with my mare herd part time and my shark mare the rest of the time), and it keeps flies off of him way better than anything else I’ve ever used. I’m kicking myself for spending so much money on fly sheets that had to be replaced annually.

The theramic sheet seems like it would be a no-go in hot weather. I’ve always thought my back on track sheets keep horses way warmer than regular sheets. And I would expect the theramic fly sheet to perform in a similar manner.

Thank you everybody for your thoughtful replies. I am now thinking maybe I should cover midges since they come out at Sunrise and sunset. Although the One that treated with repellent might be most effective. I also took a look at the zebra print https://www.sstack.com/dura-tech-interlock-mesh-zebra-fly-sheet/p/43841/.

I used to live in central Ohio which can get very humid and hot in the summer. I first tried the Rambo fly sheet on him and the material was so thick, albeit robust, that he sweat through it. I also have a Kool Coat for him which I like, but in the height of summer he sweat through that as well so I only use it for turnout in the late spring and early fall.

I love the Turtleneck fly sheet (Fly Turtle) because it fits my guy’s broad chest and big shoulders and is very breathable so he doesn’t sweat through it like the other sheets I mentioned. The Turtle sheet has very fine mesh so it protects from midges and other small insects. The company is also really great to work with, which is a big plus for me.

Thank you! I was going to purchase the turtleneck and then I have read one review that said bugs got underneath the sheet. I’m wondering if that is a concern with all sheets.

I have the WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Airflow II Fly Sheet I purchased last year on sale. The only issue was that I never felt like it was quite the perfect fit. Maybe my expectations were just too high. Also, the white looks so pretty on him the first day but then he got it all dirty. He actually looks really nice in the silver fly sheets (not that colour is truly a concern). I am less worried about their durability just want him to be as comfortable as possible.

Is this one worth buying https://www.sstack.com/mosquito-mesh-fly-sheets/p/18472w/a1/100000000367/av1/100000006472/a2/100000000398/av2/100000007711/a3/100000000376/av3/100000008675/a4/100000000522/av4/100000008563/a5/100000000521/av5/100000008562/ Has anybody tried this or simular?

I ordered it and sent it back. To me, the netting part really did feel like a window screen and not as soft as the Rambo. I just ordered the Saratoga fly sheet from Smartpak to try. I don’t live the way the cut of the neck is, but the material looks drappy. I’m toying with the idea of finding material I like and paying someone to sew one based on my Rambo’s!

That is really good to know! I don’t want one. That’s too stiff, so I think I will not be ordering that one.

I have several Mosquito mesh fly sheets. I like them well enough. But they do get hot in the worst or the summer (97+ degrees). They don’t age super well–mine look pretty rough after 3 seasons. Then again, I’m not kind to mine at ALL so that may just be me

The other one I like, is the professional choice. https://profchoice.com/i-8130656-professionals-choice-fly-sheet.html but I’m not sure if that would work for mosquitoes. I guess I just have to purchase one and try it and hope it works.

I am presuming. The full neck is a bit much for the horse, but at the same time. He particularly gets nasty bites on his belly, but it’s in around his sheets and I don’t think the belly band protects that. I always use fly spray. It’s hard to find one that actually works.

Yes, my horse used to get covered in hives they suck to manage.

Oh also! I forgot to mention that the Kool Coat rubbed my guy’s shoulders so I am hesitant to get another WB sheet for that reason. I almost got that ComFiTec sheet when I found it for 55% off last week

I bought a fly sheet for the first time in my adult life a couple years ago. Loved it, so bought more for the rest of the crew.

I went with the Amigo one. But I just tried Googling for it. Did they discontinue them? I can’t find a link.

I do really like them. Good coverage and cool in the heat.

But they only have 69" available. Must not make anymore.
