Fly sheets

Grammar alert: Rambos, not Rambo’s.

You only need apostrophes to show possession. Or a contraction, NOT FOR INDICATING PLURAL

FYI, if you are doing voice-to-text, it is automatically presented this way…and it’s often overlooked before pressing “send”. So maybe less policing?

Thank you all I really appreciate everybody’s input! I tried an amigo on him maybe 10 years ago and it seems just a little tight in the shoulders. But things could’ve changed over the last 10 years? maybe if I found one on sale, it would be worth trying as I could always resell it if it didn’t fit right.

For those that use fly sheets do you use one with a full neck? I always thought the horse would prefer not to be so covered but at the same time who wants those bugs biting their neck. I would love to hear what other people have found.

I like the amigo with the cameo. The only thing is, it might be a bit heavy.

I am a big fan of the Amigo Evolution too and was disappointed they discontinued. The replacement, slightly less ugly, “camofly” print one may be even better, so don’t despair if you didn’t grab a close out of the old style. I ended up having to get one of the camofly last year and I liked it.

Horseware® Amigo® Three-in-One Evolution Fly Sheet | Schneiders Saddlery (sstack.com)

There are some size 84 Amigo Evolutions left here.

I ended up buying the Schneider’s high neck fly sheet. This blanket is well-made and appears true to size. The only thing that I should’ve gotten a blanket with that V-neck. As I think, it’s a more comfortable fit when they’re reaching down to eat grass.

Thanks for the update, Fharoah. Did you see any with V-necks? A quick google search does not turn up any.

Rambo makes one…

My mare wears rambo 78" winter blankets that fit perfectly. A barn mate lent me her rambo protector in 75" to try for size and it was a bit too small (as expected). Ordered the 78" and it was correct in length but too tight from the wither down through the shoulder, and the back belly velcro did not even meet up (mare is not overweight per vet). Bought an 81" to see the difference and it’s OK in the chest, WAY too long, and the belly velcros overlap (IE way too big).

I gave up on thoughts of a rambo and borrowed a weatherbeeta dura-mesh sheet in 78" to try… it fits her beautifully so that is now on order.

Very interesting-I had a similar experience w the fly sheet. Maybe I’ll try the one you did. Thx!

Some of the amigos are designed with the V-neck. I think every brand of horse-wear fits a bit differently. It might be worth trying to amigo fly sheet.

All of his winter blankets are 78” Weatherbeeta. I think the Weatherbeeta fits him the best. I actually removed the leg straps and put a tail cord and the blankets stay perfectly in place. There is maybe a couple inches extra at the back, but it doesn’t bother him and never shifts even without the leg straps. In 2021 I bought him the Weatherbeeta airflow fly sheet. It fits in pretty good but I still think a lower neck that would be more comfortable a little snug when he reaches down into a grazing position.

I thought the amigo was a little tight on my Horses shoulder as well. They do make an extra large bug rug which is supposed to be for horses with wider shoulders https://www.sstack.com/amigo-xl-bug-rug-fly-sheet/p/41616/

Thankyou, timely thread. I absolutely hate the Bucas Buzz Off i got last year. I thought i was doing right by my pony by buying him the most expensive. IT SUCKS!! Returning it to dover today, so I’ll look for a rambo or amigo. Thanks everyone!

Oh really? That’s a same… I was looking at buying their Buzz Off Rain sheet recently. So I’m curious to hear your review.

Well sizing is not simple and their customer support absolutely sucks. I got the theoretically correct size for my pony, but the tight elastic belly band and buckle rubbed him raw. The browband is useless, it falls down in one second, don’t know why they have it. Luckily I can return it to dover. Just buy it from a place with a returnable policy. The ridiculous customer service at Bucus said I should have known in would rub when I first tried it. Yeah right! You’d think it would be awesome for the pricing. Not so. If the belly band rubs you have to buy the extenders for $11 + $10 shipping from toklat. So obviously folks are having trouble with rubbing. Bucas should just send them free imho, considering its a $225 (?) sheet.

He wore the professional choice in 2020. It was such a nice fly sheet. He looks so pretty in it and never rubbed him. I was just a disappointed that it got a rip in it. My horse is not hard on fly sheets at all. He has never wrecked a blanket. I nearly purchased another professional choice, but I decided I wanted to try the High neck. But in hindsight, the high wasn’t the greatest idea Because when he puts his head down to graze, I actually wish I’d bought a full neck just for dawn, and dusk, when the Noseeums come out.

What a bummer! Thanks for letting me know!

Here is an update. The fly sheet I got is well-made and the material is strong but I regret getting a fly sheet without a belly guard. I will be keeping my eye open for a good sale to get a different sheet. I am pretty much limited to only buy one sheet per year. I may give my Weatherbeeta airflow another try.

I appreciate everybody’s responses and wish you guys have a good luck finding the right fly sheet for your horses.

An article in a recent issue of The Horse magazine reports the latest research. Zebra-striped fly sheets work the best. They confuse the flies.

I have also been looking at the zebra patterns. In more careful review my top three now our premier equine super lite https://www.premierequine.co.uk/products/super-lite-fly-rug-with-surcingles

Amigo https://picovs.ca/products/amigo-camofly-fly-sheet. They are not pretty but I like the low neck like. I really like the disk closure on these. My only hesitation is I had one years ago and I just thought it was a bit tight in his shoulders. This was like 10 years ago so it may not be the same today.

The Weatherbeeta combo I kick myself for not buying last year when it was on sale super cheap
