Fly Spray for Tiny Biting Gnats

My ride this morning was made much more difficult by the swarms of tiny biting gnats that would attack whenever we stood still. It made mounting very difficult as my normally super quiet steed could not stop trying to rub his neck.

He had on Ultrashield Black, applied maybe two hours prior and then reapplied like crazy in an attempt to stop the swarm. It helped long enough for me to get on, but when I got off, they were back like crazy.

Location is South Shore Massachusetts. Temp is mid-70s, very humid.

Anyone having any luck with a different fly spray for this particular irritant? I also have Eco Vet but today is my shipping day from SP so can get some new stuff if I get my order in soon enough.

PS, they were biting me, too. I don’t blame him for being antsy.

I haven’t yet found a truly great method to keep them away. Sometimes I get super frustrated and use OFF, which I am not proud of.

I do REALLY like the fly rider sheet from Rambo or just a simple small mesh riding hood if the gnats/flies aren’t terrible. I have had to find small vendors for the riding hoods because the larger company isn’t making them any more. I also put fly mesh over my helmet so I am eating the evil bugs.

My super gnat sensitive friesians need the full turnout getup too. Between their legs and all.

From CT.

Ecovet works super well for repelling gnats IME. We are very close in location and these guys are out full force at our place. I use the super concentrated stuff in the tiny bottle and a damp towel to get it on their neck, ears, and forehead. I also spray it on the brim of my helmet and their fly mask/bonnet.

The Pyranha in the yellow bottle and the original Wipe is working best here this year.
