Fly whisk questions and recommendations?

After falling off today when my poor horse was being tormented by a horsefly I couldn’t see, I have now decided it is a good idea for me to get a fly whisk.

Any recommendations? And do the different colors of whisk (I have seen some with grayish hairs, others with black) mean anything? I plan to cap a few times with Potomac this season, and want to make sure I’m not unknowingly committing a fashion or etiquette faux pas if I bring a whisk.

Sorry about your unscheduled dismount. Hope you’re okay.

As for fly whisks, as far as I know the colors are just a personal choice but you might find some difference in the hair between individual ones. I assume we’re talking “blonde” or “black,” not purple or pink! :-0

Most hunts that I know (in VA) are indifferent to people carrying them during cubbing season but might prefer not during formal season. Assuming you will go out early in cubbing season I’d suggest asking someone at the meet, say the Field Secretary or some established member.

Have fun!

Oh yes, perfectly ok…the ground was soft after the rain we’ve had!
And yes, was asking for cubbing season. Probably wouldn’t need it anyway once the formal season starts.

Thanks for the advice!

Yes! good to carry for cubbing in Va. as it’s bee season and can really be helpful if ground bees get stirred up by the folks up front! Pissy little boogers!! The bees/yellow jackets I mean!!

Ouch on the dismount. :frowning: I bought my fly whisk from Bartville Harness and it has held up perfectly for 5 years. Seems like it was around $50 when I bought it. I bought one from SmartPac a few years earlier and it is an anemic excuse for a fly whisk and it cost about the same as Bartvilles. Good luck!
