Fly whisk questions

Have you used one? Do you use one? General commentary?

Recommendations if you have found any that you like? Googling reveals a wide range of prices (and, I am guessing, quality). I would think longer hair would be better.

I know they are made from horse hair, probably from India :frowning: [my sad emoji is not showing up - insert here]

Thanks in advance

I have used one for years during the summer months. In our climate, even with bug spray, there are the big bomber flies that seem impervious to chemicals of all kinds.

I really like them. The only downside I could see to them is that if you need to carry a crop or whip, it will be hard to manage a fly whisk on top of that.

Also, you may have to desensitize your horse to the whisk–some horses are a little leery of the fact that your arm has suddenly grown a tail!

My current fly whisk is a County. I’ve had it for at least five years, and have taken no care of it at all. It looks essentially new. BTW, when I google ā€œcounty fly whiskā€ it comes up as having an ivory-colored shaft and a brown whisk. Mine has a brown shaft and a more roan-ish whisk. So I think there’s some variation in colors.

I have one! My horse and I both love it. I don’t remember which brand I have, but I think it cost about 30$, it has held up for several summers now. Definitely get your horse used to it swishing all over, and also be mindful of other horses.

One risk is that you’re holding a wooden stick, which could be dangerous if you fall on it or get impaled if your horse does something nutty, which happened to me once. The stick jammed somewhere—pommel, his neck, idk, and dug into my body. It hurt and scared the crap out of me, and I had a vest on. It could have been quite bad if I hadn’t been wearing one. So I only carry a wooden one if my horse is tired and we’re cooling out, and I use it when hand grazing.

I made one out of an old crop and duct taped torn denim to the end to make the swisher. It works well and is safer, I think. Although not terribly fashionable.

Add me to the non fashionable crowd: I just break off a thin branch from a tree as I’m riding by, and strip off most of the leaves, except for a bunch of leaves at the end. My horse has never been fazed by getting swished with the leaves – it’s especially useful to get those deer flies that attack her poll and ears. And if I drop it, I just grab another branch.

reposting, I fixed a typo and it said I was spam.

I have one, and the horses and I love it. I acclimate them on the ground to it, and they let me swat them all over while I’m riding including the poll. My youngest horse was 4 last year, and he nickered at it like another horse the first time I rode in it but otherwise no reactions.

I make my own. I bang my horse’s tail before mud season every couple years and wrap and glue it onto a bamboo stick. Works great.

I mean I use the cut-off ten or twelve inches for the whisk!

I can’t imagine riding in the summer without one! I buy mine from Bartville Harness in PA. Seems like they run $40/$50 and it will last forever if you take care of it.

Mine make me feel like Lady Somebody out for a summer hack. Miss Pony doesn’t mind it at all and it does discourage the horseflies.

Love mine- as does Missy Mare! I took the time to get her used to it, can swipe her face, belly , back. Punchy- not sure why a whisk would be more dangerous than a crop?
