We are looking to purchase a used system and there are several different brands and styles to choose. Any input as to what works and which brands I should be shopping for. Any suggestions as to where to find a used system as well would be appreciated. We have a smaller warmblood mare that has what appears to be a very large baby due next month. Thanks for the suggestions.
We use the Breeder Alert system (along with camera surveillance and human monitoring) and are very happy with it. I do not know where to suggest you look for a used system other than the old standards such as eBay and Craigslist and the classifieds here on COTH. Perhaps some of the Facebook Breeder network groups might also be a source. I would make sure you get a newer type system (2009 or later) because they made quite a few improvements to the system at that time.
Have used the Foalert System for probably 15 years with excellent success. That’s when you realize how much sleep you used to lose…
We’ve used the Breeder Alert system for about 14 years now. Upgraded to the newer smaller units a few years ago. We also have cameras in the foaling stalls. I like the Breeder Alert system because it just goes on the halter. I like it because it doesn’t involve suturing.
We also find it useful if you have a horse that’s a bit colicy.
I have used the Breeders Alert for a few years now and am really pleased. You get the odd “false alarm” but some of my mares don’t lay down towards the end so when it does go off you know it is the real thing! But I would still rather get a few false alarms and sleep soundly in between then worry about them and trying to watch 24/7 on no sleep. Definitely saves a lot of sleepless nights!
