Foal Safe - Foaling Stall dividers or partitions that swing

We are building a couple of shedrows which work well for our hot/humid climate. One shedrow will have 4 stalls measuring 12’x12’. We want 2 of the stall dividers/partitions to be removable so that we have the option to make it it into 2 regular size stalls and one foaling size stall (12’x24’) or just two foaling size stalls.

Basically, we need flexibility in this particular application. It needs to be easy to convert and we don’t have much storage space here so I’m not looking for something where I have to take boards out one-by-one whenever I want it to have a foaling size stall. I know some of the barn systems like MD Barns have the type of movable partition that can roll along the front and back wall frame and lay flat against the permanent side wall. We have a wood frame and stalls so we won’t be putting in that sort of system.

I know that there are partitions that will swing open and lay flat against the back wall. It obviously utilizes heavy duty hinges on the back wall and a latching mechanism on the front wall. While looking at these I have to think about horse and foal safety with the hinges and latches, etc.

Ramm Fence & Stalls can make such a partition but the latch system they put on theirs looks too flimsy and unsafe. The latches look like your typical barn door latch and that seems like some sharp, unsafe edges not to mention that those little latches don’t appear to be strong enough for holding a wall closed if a horse should kick or lean against it.

Classic Equine - I’ve not spoken to them yet. I saw a swinging partition that they sold to a breeder and it looks safer than Ramm’s. I’ll want to get stall fronts that match the dividers and Classic Equine’s stall fronts are fancier than what we have in mind. One thing I didn’t like about their latching mechanism is that it had a relatively large square hole around the latch where a baby foot or leg could get caught. It’s been awhile since that farm bought that partition so maybe there have been more manufacturers taking a crack at it. Unfortunately the swinging partitions aren’t easy to find on the internet.

Have any fellow breeders done the legwork and found commercially available, safe swinging stall partitions? If so, what has your experience been. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction for a quality product. Please let me know.

Thank you so much!

Bumping this up for you.

From watching the Glenhill mares on Marestare it looks like she has some kind of folding wall. Maybe ask her what she has.

Classic, Lucas and any high-end stall manufacturer will be able to manufacture a swinging partition for you. The gaps are negligible, and you can design any type you’d like. I’ve ordered swinging partitions for two stalls from Frey Brothers in the small expanded mesh/metal.

My experience is with the boards that have to be removed one at a time… so I can’t help you there. Sorry.

I am however interrested in seeing your shed row type stalls… If you are interrested in sharing them. I’m in the Huntsville area and am getting ready to put in shedrow stalls, 2 10x15 and a 10x20 that can be converted into 2 10x10 (with a simple gate, not foal proof) if we get visitors.

I have dividers similar to what you are describing. My husband fabricated them for me. Mine turns 2 12x12 in to a 12x24. The divider folds accordion style (3 sections fold and secure up against the back wall).
I can take photos and send them to you if you are interested. It was a relatively easy project that was completed in one day.

I’m interrested in pictures please!!

Me three, I’d love to see photos of peoples’ various foaling barns/stalls.

Years ago we made stall dividers to make our foaling stalls into two standard stalls. Both walls were hung with big hinges. Half the wall swung and laid flat against the back wall and half swung across the front wall blocking the doorway to one stall. We had a strip of rubber at the bottom to close all gaps when there were two stalls. Two pieces of 2x4 dropped across the place the doors came together to make a solid wall for two stalls.

I see this thread isn’t new. I was ordering a shedrow barn and happened to mention that I am getting it for pony mares who are foaling. I was asked if I’d be interested in the removable partition… I might be… I wondered if anybody has had any experience. It’s just me and a small child, so if it is really heavy it wouldn’t be worth it for us.

I asked to get some more info or photos… just curious if anybody has seen or tried it.

I use a pipe gate to divide my 11 x 24ft foaling stall into 2 “regular” stalls.

There are 2 heavy posts (4-5" in diameter) buried opposite one another against each long wall (in the middle, obviously). A heavy dute pipe gate is hung there that is the same length as the stall is wide. If I want it to be open, the enclosure is long enough that I just swing the gate open and clip it open on the wall of Stall #2.

If I want to use it as 2 stalls for mature horses just to come in an eat, I just close the gate.

If I want to put a foal or small horse on one side, I (originally) had two “grooves” made out of 1x1" next to the base of the gate posts. Then I could slide a piece of heavy plywood in and out to make a solid “wall” at the base of the gate. It not only stabilized the gate, but kept the baby from getting under the gate or a rolling horse putting a leg under.

Never had a problem.

However, here’s another cheap alternative: I’ve actually used old horse blankets tied to the 2nd lowest rail of the gate to do the same thing. As long as the blankets hit the ground, I’ve found horses are not likely to kick or roll against them. Strange but true…(as least in my experience).

In an pinch, I’ve even used this “divider” to separate 2 mare/foal combos, but I’ve used an old comforter to cover the entire gate. Looked really trashy :eek:, but it was very effective! The “solid” barrier was enough to keep both parties happy.

Hope this helps…

You can use Acoustic partitions to partition rooms. It is a flexible space dividing partition wall. Which is made of aluminum frame with excellent durability and rigidity. These sliding folding partition products shape space by providing flexible sight and sound dividing, enable to control your space.
