Foal Slab Fracture--Surgery?

Well in VERY unfortunate news, my just over a month old foal came in 4/5 lame on Monday. Diagnosed yesterday with a slab fracture. One surgeon is optimistic for a full recovery/performance career. One says I’m “considering saving a lifelong pasture puff/broodmare.” Any experience here? Time is of the essence so any anecdotes or jingles are very much appreciated.

Gosh, I’m so sorry! Jingles for sure…no experience w foals but I have seen former race horses be sound after surgery for a slab fracture.

Ouch. So sorry to read this. No experience with foals, but have seen plenty of older horses come back from it.

No experience here, just fervent jingles!

A friend of mine had a jr hunter years ago that had suffered a slab fracture as a foal (or very young, maybe a yearling?). She didn’t own him then, so I don’t know what his rehab was like, but she bought him when he was 10ish and to my knowledge it was never an issue. He had quite a long show career and IIRC when he did finally retire it wasn’t related.

So sorry to hear of your foal’s injury and hoping for quick, easy, and thorough healing!
