Foal Slip sizing question ?

I want to order a foal slip - what sizes do folks use?

I think i will order from Quinlin if they have it in stock - but just dont know how big/small…

they list “newborn” and “foal”

foal-in-the-oven is WB x GRP

suggestions?

also, when do they graduate from foal slip to regular halter? what size will i need then?

<trying to pass the time while waiting  >

I have a couple of the figure 8 foal halters, one I got from Western Saddlery in Pleasanton and one just arrived Saturday from VTOsaddlery. I get the foal size, but then, both those places only offer foal size. Both of the ones I just bought come with two leather head pieces so they are quite adjustable. A two month old foal is still able to wear his foal halter thanks to that, and the one with the shorter leather crown piece should fit just about any size newborn head.

I will check out VTO - thanks!

Clint what else might I need for my soon-to-be baby ? its pretty warm here so i shouldn’t need a blanket. anything else?

she is at foaling facility so they have everything they need foaling wise…

I have a bunch of Qullins-love them. I have both the Newborn and Older foal halters–you might consider one of each as you will need them both most likely. I love the figure eight for the new babies and the older foal halters for sucklings/weanlings.

My foal is very fond of his foal fly mask. They kind of cover the whole face when they are really young, but he doesn’t seem to mind that. Farnam makes one that works pretty well.

For foal fly masks, buy the SuperMask for miniature horses. It has velcro adjustment behind the ears as well as below the jaw. You can tighten it up to fit a newborn head, and adjust it as they grow. You may need to fold the excess velcro strap in half before you stick it to itself (don’t cut it, you’ll need it later). IME, the “foal” sized SuperMask doesn’t fit until they’re 3+ months old. The mini SuperMasks only come in purple, but that’s ok because it’s pretty easy to find out in the field if it comes off.

Weanlings wearing their masks

I have not had much luck with brands other than SuperMask. Cashel makes a mini size, but it doesn’t have the extra velcro behind the ears. The mini SuperMask can often be found on sale online (try Jeffers) for about $10.

![](y colt wasn’t a huge fan of the figure 8 when I was working on training basics. Granted, he was my first so maybe it was my fault, but it seemed harsh on his nose so I looked for something padded and found this and ADORE it! I lucked into it on ebay for pretty cheap, so when I got my second colt I had to search for it, but it’s awesome. Well padded and adjusts at the nose, crown AND chin so they can grow with it. used it at a week old to now he’s 2.5 months with room to spare.

EventerAJ, I didn’t know that about the mini masks and the adjustable velcro. Next time I’ll try them. The Farnam Supermask foal mask size works on my warmblood foals okay when they are about a month old, but as newborns, and in full fly season, a tighter fit would be better.

My little guy inherited his older sisters Cashel–I cant remember if its a Mini or Foal size (but I think its a foal).

Quillan newborn size. Even my full WB’s wear the newborn for the first couple weeks. But I agree, just order both - you’ll need it later!
