Foal Watch 2023

thought I would add my contribution to this thread.

Here’s my Fürst Nyphenberg filly o/o my Banderas mare.

She’s a fairly dark foal for me, not exactly what I was expecting. Can’t wait until she unfolds :heartpulse:

SO cute! Your mare is beautiful as well.

Still waiting here. Looked like we were getting closer and closer but now we’ve stalled out a bit. In other 2023 breeding season news, my other mare was bred last night so now I cross my fingers for good news in two weeks. More waiting!

After a quiet month, I’m back with another bundle of joy! Dialed In - Lisvernane.

Lisvernane (“Liver”) has been a difficult case since we bought her last year. Diagnosed with chronic pneumonia, we thought we had a handle on it until she shipped south again. Trailering (dust, haynets?) triggers the pneumonia to flare up, and we’ve been fighting the disease for the past few months. She can breathe ok, but is clearly uncomfortable and feeling icky makes her stop eating. The pneumonia responds well to doxycycline, but that antibiotic should not be used when pregnant. We tried various other safe abx, but could not get her feeling much better. She has also been treated religiously with omeprazole/nexium, that sometimes helps but sometimes not. She goes on and off her feed, and is very underweight. She has unlimited soft alfalfa hay, beet pulp, ration balancer, mare/foal feed, protein supplements, fat supplements (that she WILL NOT TOUCH), and just about anything we can try to tempt her. She probably would benefit from serious ulcer meds, sucralfate and misoprostol, but again that’s not for pregnant mares. Through all of this, her foal was alive and kicking inside. Liver would gain a bit of weight and start to look better, then fall off again…and the past few weeks it seems that ALL of her calories have been going to her belly.

She has been building a small udder, but we were already planning to have a nursemare ready. Our older barren mare Midge has been on Domperidone for 10 days, but hasn’t started milking yet. Last night Liver’s milk tested around 15… ok getting somewhere, but she may still have a week. Tonight at 6pm it jumped to 27 and began to turn white. :eyes: Her vulva was a little gappy. Otherwise her behavior was normal… quiet, munching hay, picking at dinner. I planned to keep an eye on the camera tonight and set my overnight hourly alarms.

At 8:30pm I heard barn cats fighting and went to check it out. (Night check is usually at 9pm). I noticed Liver was covered in straw…and on the ground is a wet, chestnut foal! Sneaky mare! Placenta was out, foal was lively and flopping about. No evidence of pawing or stall walking, the straw was undisturbed and had only one wet spot where the water broke. Filly got up quickly and nursed within 20 minutes. Liver’s colostrum tested off the chart above 35. She still doesn’t have a very full udder and may need a nurse mare, but for now it should be enough and we will see how she responds over the next couple days. Despite her mother’s poor condition, the filly appears alert and in good health. Vet check tomorrow, and will try to develop a plan in Liver’s best interest. I’m feeling very thankful that this filly is doing well, and that Liver managed okay without my help!

Poor quality pics tonight, will get some better ones tomorrow. Pretty plain chestnut with a small star.

Congratulations, @EventerAJ!

Hooray for a happy foal! Hopefully momma will perk up and gain for you soon!

What a pretty girl! Glad the foal arrived safe and sound and I hope that mom feels better soon too!

Yay for a filly! I have a plain chestnut mare with a star so I’m a bit partial

Good luck getting mama feeling better. My mare can also be very ulcery and picky with her food. I found that GutX has actually really helped her. She gets double the performance dose (so 2 pumps twice a day), but it was the only thing that kept her eating through her pregnancy. I don’t believe it actually treats ulcers like it claims since my mare went off her food again any time I tried to cut back, but I do think it makes her tummy comfortable enough to eat. Might be worth trying. If they won’t eat it in their food I just syringe it into their mouth.

Congratulations and well done! It’s difficult to turn a tough case into good news and you succeeded in doing so.

Liver and her filly continue to do well today. Vet pulled blood for both of them, and agreed for the time being to wait and see how the mare does with nursing for the next few days. Depending on bloodwork results, we will formulate a treatment plan and help Liver get back into full health.

Meanwhile, I’ve got Regatta Colors at 345 days; Champagne On Tap at 341; Faerie Queene and Prayer Bell both at 332; and Sophie’s Meatball holding tough at 358. Sophie has no udder whatsoever, but vet checked, foal is alive. This is her first time foaling with me; previous farms have said 360+ days is normal for her, and one year she went 380 days. :flushed: Lots of sleepless nights for the next couple weeks!

Wow - great job, Liver! Hope she starts feeling better soon!
