Foal Watch 2024

They said we will probably have to inject his hocks when we start riding him. He may not be able to have the full athletic future we hoped for (he was supposed to start as a racehorse) but we will see. There are different options with fusing hocks, etc if needed but we won’t really know until he gets a little older. The angles on his hind legs can still improve a bit but he’s getting around well!

Our other mare waited until 2 days after we got home to foal, but we got to watch on cameras! Day 343 big healthy filly

Feisty Fuego! Cute, but oh boy are you gonna get a shock when you have to learn your manners, little man!

Those legs on the filly! For days!

Oh my, when you finally let go of him, he is going to be very silly.

Id say no, he looks pretty proportionate (as much as they can, ha) for his age.

He looks to have gotten the hang of those legs pretty well! Just needs a little time to grow into them. And boy does he have a good base of support under them.

His legs look proportionate to me too.

Those are some big baby feet for sure.

For “just a grade” he is pretty fancy. I think that he has a great future!

Mustangs have quite sturdy feet. An his sire is a mustang.

Rizada is fairly nervous. I took some photos, but no one was comfortable. I’ll get more later after she calms down some.

Wow, what a match! Little “Mini Me”!

Yeah…kinda. I hope not too much though. If just coloring and not conformation i’ll be happy!

Sad to say I have no eye for the finer points of conformation and no experience with foals – so I wouldn’t dare make pronouncements about her eventual conformational similarity, I was only struck by the color & general markings, accentuated by some silly cosmetic things like mom’s short tail!

Curly horses OFTEN have sparse manes and short tails. it’s pretty common.

Ah, I did know that (and have seen it), but had forgotten that Rizada was curly, too. Though now that you point that out, of course the tail should have reminded me. But it only put me in mind of some Appaloosa tails I saw back in the day, clearly tweaking the wrong set of memory cells.

Holy cow its a nearly carbon copy of Rizada ! Name her Ditto! I can’t wait to see more pics.

I need help. For varying reasons, Stork has to stay inside on shavings besides a 15 min handwalk in the evening. He is now getting a gnarly hock rub, despite deep, deep bedding and daily treatment. Any suggestions? I’m at my wits end.

No experience with foals for this but we used gauze and duct tape on one that was on stall rest and getting hock sores years ago. Worked great and way better than the hock boots. Elasticon could work as well?

I think Hazel has gotten the hang of those long legs of his:
