I thought I’d shared on here but I must have just posted on FB. I tried to research incomplete ossification of cuboidal bones and couldn’t find a lot of examples of x rays or associated outcomes, so I wanted to share his. Hopefully no one else has to go through the same thing, but if so, I’m happy to share any information on what we’ve been through.
That is incredible. Sad way to have to start life, but what progress! Thank you for sharing
This video absolutely made my day! Thank you for sharing!
i’m all-IN for Team Fuego!!! you GO little guy!!!
Great photo and what a beautiful spot for babies to grow up!
What a beautiful baby!
That is really interesting. Thank you for sharing.
The vet checked Arielle this morning, and it looks like she is coming into heat and will be bred this weekend. We’re checking her early Friday morning to confirm that she’s progressing. She’s being bred on a sort of lease back to the woman I bought her from (though she will stay here during the pregnancy). Fingers crossed for a smooth process. I could use a lucky break or ten this year.
It’s wonderful to see how much progress your little dude is making, @Fuego1!
Holy Smokes that’s insane, I’m so glad Fuego is doing so well!!
Ordered semen this morning. Arielle isn’t as close as I would have preferred, at a 29-30 mm follicle and 2+ edema, but, based on her usual patterns, I don’t see any chance of her holding until Tuesday (she usually ovulates right at a ~40 mm and is only in good heat for 2-3 days), so…better early than late, yes?
Send “grow and ovulate” jingles, please!
Definitely better early. If the semen is good, should still be viable and able to do the job for about 4-5 days inside the mare.
Jingles that Arielle cooperates and that the sperm are long lived. Last year after breeding I kept a small sample of the extra dose around and checked it daily, surprisingly even on day 7 after collection there were still some swimmers.
The shipment arrived right on schedule, and, when I took Arielle over to my trainer’s arena for a ride this afternoon, she was breaking down as soon as she got off the trailer and saw/heard the other horses, so I figured we were good on the timing. Sure enough, we just inseminated her, and everything looks just about perfect. She should ovulate no later than tomorrow evening, based on when I gave her Sucromate yesterday. I don’t think the vet will be able to make it back out here tomorrow (and I need to go pick up my new mare then), but I should be able to drop her off at the clinic on my way (ish) to work Monday and leave her there for the day to confirm that she did actually ovulate. She has never been one to pool fluid, but I’ll do oxytocin anyway, since we can’t check her tomorrow. Let the two week wait begin!
Home with my new mare, Carina!
She’s in great body condition but in desperate need of some grooming and a hoof trim, so real photos will have to wait a bit. She seems very sweet, though, and already I can tell she’s a lot like her paternal sister Arielle. Now I just cross my fingers and hope she’s still fertile!
I always admired her sire, Horatio. (I value the Al-Marah influence in my own little herd – particularly the “Double R”. My mare who is due at the end of May is out of a “Double R” mare. My personal riding horse is of one of my pregnant mare’s sons – with heavy Indraff influence. I’m hoping the 2024 foal is a filly – I really want to continue this dam line!)
Best wishes for success with Arielle this year and with Carina too!
Thank you, @DawnJL! This mare has what is probably a stronger dam side pedigree than Arielle’s: https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/am+dazzling+carina.
She’s no spring chicken, though, and hasn’t had a foal since I think 2019. So I’m trying not to get my hopes up until after a biopsy and culture.
Would you do ET?
Not with this mare. I hope to be able to do it with Sydney in a year or two, and one ET per year will already be stretching my breeding budget. If this one can’t carry foals, she can babysit whoever is left home when others leave for rides, weanlings, etc. and enjoy a cushy retirement.
