Foal with constant diarrhea

That’s good news!! And not to worry, in my scouring of the Net I found MANY references as to how common “diarrhea” is in horses, especially foals.

And SOFT stools is not diarrhea, as we have established . Again, in foal or mature horse I would rather have the stools abit soft that too hard & dry.

Of course you should monitor it, but I think he will be just fine…and you won’t even have to wait till weaning…I’m sure as he gets older and starts eating more forage things will probably smooth our even more. And, as others have mentioned, along around month 3-4, the mare’s milk will lose much of it’s richness and the problem will probably clear up.

If he is bright-eyed, playful and energetic, he is fine. Just keep your eyes out that you don’t OVER DO all the stuff you are giving him…every few weeks I would (slowly, over the course of several days) withdraw all the lactaid & such and see what happens. Because (again) not pooping is just as dangerous as pooping soft stools…in fact, I think it’s MORE dangerous.

Good luck – he sounds adorable – can you post the pic somewhere else so we can see it?

And I don’t think I ever asked – what is his breeding and what are your future plans for him?

Thanks, I will definitely keep you posted! I will make sure he doesn’t get an overdose of meds either… Thanks for everyone’s advice! Here is a link to a facebook album, let me know if you can see it, this is the first two weeks of his life- I have a ton of pictures (1835 to be exact) so it is kind of hard to load them into albums on FB with my computer- but there is video too, feel free to friend me!

He is by Bon Balou out of an Alla Czar mare, whose damsire was Schoenfeld, and my plans are for him to be a derby horse, but I’m going to let him tell me what he wants to do- the way he zips around the paddock he might be a jumper, but I dont have the guts for that!

I don’t think you are wierd at all, Zoey101! I am just as obsessed with poop in times like that!

If he is doing well in other aspects, then he should be fine.

Bon Balou–that is VERY exciting! I tried to check out your link, but I couldn’t get the one above to work.:frowning:

Kyzteke, I sent you back a PM.

Does this link work? The album is public so it should be there!

I had a foal like yours where we tried a course of everything and then everything again. He seemed otherwise very healthy. Finally had a TCVM vet come out for a different matter and after reading his tongue and pulse, she put him on either Happy Earth or Equine GI (long time ago) and in two days it was completely resolved. I was so thankful to not have to hose down a stinky butt everyday!! Can’t explain why it worked, but just glad it did.

I still couldn’t get it to work, but it could just be my phone. I will try from a computer next time I get to one. I want to see him!

It worked for me, they are both lovely! Congrats.

TOTAL cutie!! And obviously not suffering from lack of energy.

I did notice he (like most foals) is doing alot of licking. Anything he could be exposed to that might be causing loose stools? Weeds, weird paint, etc. etc?

LOVE his breeding…looks like you have a great derby prospect there.

Thanks!! I’m in love! His dam is very mouthy/licky so wonder if he learns from watching her? There aren’t any weird plants but maybe the metal bars on his stall? I’ll look! The hay is what they call first cut, so wondering if its just really rich?
