Foal with slight overbite

Is there anything to be done? He’s 2 months old and was premature (if that makes a difference). Can/will they grow out of it? It doesn’t seem to have affected his eating abilities.

Depends on how severe, but in my experience, most grow out of it

My filly was 2 weeks early and all knock kneed, and had an over bite. I of course was in a panic! She out grew it.

It is actually “normal” for foals to have a slight overbite - not pronounced, but slight. Many vets do not know this. A design feature to facilitate early drinking / eating, especially with their (relative to legs) shorter necks.

This, I paniced first time I noticed this and asked the vet and this was basically her response to me

Thank you!

My 9 month old filly had an over bite that was slight and by the time she was 2 it was gone.

Just another voice saying the same thing. Luckily for me, my first homebred had a worse overbite than any of the later foals – and his took a bit longer to resolve (he was nearly two when I concluded that his bite was finally perfect). It was truly scary for quite a while. Now I am very relaxed about the whole thing, thinking “remember CJ’s bite – if THAT resolved itself… anything can!”

And until now I didn’t even know it was “normal”.

My filly had a slight overbite that had me all in a tizzy. She outgrew it!

I had a foal with an overbite, and he didn’t outgrow it. So, since there are a couple of things that can be done if it is caught early, keep an eye on it. Part of knowing whether he will outgrow it is your definition of “slight”. In my foal’s case, at six or seven months, although his teeth had some meeting in front, it was beyond slight, which I would define as something like 1/8".

I think I’ll ask the vet next time she’s out then. Without measuring it, I’d say that I probably wouldn’t notice 1/8th inch, so I suspect it is a little more.

This is a very foggy memory but I recall my vet saying something about the jaw vs. the teeth, in terms of what will correct itself and what will not. I can’t recall whether that was just an explanation, or actually something that could be determined, i.e. “if it looks like X, it’s temporary, but if it looks like Y, it’s permanent”.

I know I did ask about corrective measures with my first colt. Can’t remember exactly how I phrased the question but it must have been something like “what would I get if I put CJ in braces?” because the answer was “a miserable, unhappy colt with an overbite”.

When he was in the 3-4 month age range I could stick the width of two fingers between his upper and lower teeth (and I have fat little fingers)!!!

Does anyone know what “3/4 tooth bite” means?
