I’m reading Bowen’s Dynasties from 2000 about sire lines. One stat that he always gives is the sire’s total percentage of stakes winners from total lifetime foals.
Many of the sires from the past had staggering percentages of stakes winners. Broomstick, for instance, had an incredible 25%; Peter Pan had 20%; Pennant had 16%; Equipoise had 12%; Black Toney had 18%; Celt had 15%; Ultimus had 21%; High Time had 13%; Luke McLuke had 12%; Star Shoot had 13%; Sweep had 12%, and even The Porter had 11%. Fair Play had a gaudy 18%: MOW came in at 17%; War Admiral was at 11%. To bring the Fair Play line to modern times, Intentionally sired 11% stakes winners, while In Reality had 15%.
Nasrullah sired 23% stakes winners from foals. So did Bold Ruler. Royal Charger was at 16%; Turn-To at 11%; Hail to Reason at 14%; and Roberto at 17%.
Hell, Northern Dancer sired 23% stakes winners from foals; Nijinsky was at 18%; Nureyev was at 15%; Danzig was at 18% when the book was written; and Sadler’s Wells was at 16% in 2000 and his total foals were much higher than those in the past. Storm Cat was at 16% when the book was written.
Is there an American stallion today with a foals to Stakes winners percentage of over 15%?
