Food Intolerance Testing for dog - any experience or reviews?

My dog has been experiencing this reoccurring health issue that none of the many vets we have visited have been able to properly diagnose. My next step is to do a food intolerance test and I found two tests that are on the complete opposite end of the price spectrum. One is $30 and the other is $300.

Has anyone used either? What was your experience like working with the company?

Are there other tests available that you have used?

There is no accurate food allergy test that exists. You need to do a true elimination diet/food challenge.

Unfortunately, I’ve tried that for awhile now and have not found out if/what could be causing the problem. Even with limited ingredient foods

Have you had any testing for low level chronic pancreatitis?

How long did you stick with the food trials? And when on one did you ever break it and give treats etc? Sometimes something so small can mess up the whole trial.

What is the recurring health issue?

No, we have not.

We stick with the food trials for as long as my dog isn’t sick.
We do give treats, but when going through the ingredient elimination, we try to keep them consistent.

What is the recurring health issue?

She will start obsessively licking and air gulping. Which causes her to swallow air and then her stomach hurts, which then creates this endless cycle. Sometimes she will throw up with no signs of eating something abnormal. When she feels sick, she will eat anything and everything in the house to make herself throw up (the wall, the floor, the baseboard, blankets). Except this doesn’t always result in her throwing up so now she has to pass it if we don’t catch it in time to make her vomit. She won’t sleep for at least 24 hours because she is so uncomfortable. Sometimes, when she does throw up, it all stops. Sometimes I can hear her stomach making noises, or she is overly gassy. The symptoms are not always the same but have some random similarities.

And the reoccurrence pattern is not always the same. It may happen twice a year or once every other month. Sometimes more than once a month. There is no obvious pattern to it.

We managed to take her to the vet’s office while this was happening and have taken many videos. Tried all kinds of probiotics, supplements, all kinds of expensive & high quality food. We get completely different ideas from the vets; a seizure, a neurological problem, her teeth were hurting, & acid reflux were some that I can remember right now.

I would try a low fat diet for a few weeks. I was always feeding my dog really high quality grain free, single ingredient, even tried raw foods and she was always sick. With her it was low level pancreatitis. As soon as I got her on the gastro canned food magically she was back to being playful and normal with zero stomach issues after that. Even if you just found an over the counter low fat food to try it’s worth a shot. Be careful with treats too I stick to ones that re 10% or lower in fat percentages.

I just tested my husband’s dog with Spectrum. He’s doing much better since I changed food to avoid what he came back as allergic to.

One option is to put her on a Hydrolyzed protein diet for 8 weeks and no treats and see if things improve

Define “awhile” because I was told I needed 4 months of complete elimination diet to rule out (or in) food sensitivities. Should see some improvement in 8 weeks but 4 months to be sure.

And NO treats. Nothing besides the “approved” food. Nothing at all. Not even a scrap.

Was told by multiple vets the dog allergy testing is a total waste of money. They throw false positives and false negatives all the time.

If you have done 4 months with no change, it’s not the food.

So did you treat for acid reflux and if so, how? Did you treat for seizures or rule them out?

I agree that it if is 2x a year, it’s not likely to be food intolerance unless the dog is getting random treats/junk from another source.

It would be much more frequent if it was a food your were feeding.

We did that as well but the issue still occurred.

Sorry you’re dealing with this!

Has your vet considered that the licking and air gulping could be OCD behavior? There’s a good bit of research available—for instance: https://thesciencedog.wordpress.com/…sive-disorder/

There are plenty of safe anti-obsessional meds that you could try to rule it out.

It was an idea, but considering there have been times she has been extremely gassy and/or constipated, I am pursuing the GI/digestion idea at the moment.

Honestly, all of my current dog’s issues have vanished now that I cook for him (been 1 full year). It is well known in the human world that highly processed food is not good for the gut or the mind. Never mind the protein source, highly processed “convenience” food is largely garbage. And that basically defines all commercial pet food. All of it.

Have you tested for giardia and/or other parasites?
