For All the Skylar Wireman Fans

She won her first World Cup qualifier last night in Fort Worth at the ripe old age of 19 on a horse that’s only nine years old. Good for her!

I watched last night and thought what a smooth recovery on that missed turn.

I give it until the next Olympic cycle (2028) for her to make a senior team. Once she gets the right horse, it’ll be all over.

I was there and my god she was just incredible! I think the future holds great things for her!

I rode with her mother Shayne growing up - she and Shayne are the real deal. It’s been exciting to watch Skylar move up consistently on both coasts but really comes as no surprise coming from that program. Shayne produces winners and was always consistent and tough when necessary.

When I went down to the Maclay regionals at the Oaks in September, Shayne and Skyler’s group were the ones that stood out with respect to the girls all helping each other. That and the fact that I think they had more riders in the top ten than any other trainer.

Glad to see that helping each other out has not fallen by the wayside.

I no longer attend shows, but it is surprising to me that riders helping one another are so newsworthy, and seemingly unexpected. Helping out was the norm in my experience, but that was “back in the day”.

I may be cynical but in my experience being a decent human being, and a good sport was rather expected. Apparently now it’s a big deal. Glad an example of basic sportsmanship is making news. Whatever it takes…

I was at the WIHS in 2022 and while I was waiting for my food out back, I watched the work off finalists warming up and I very vividly remember seeing Augusta and Skylar giving each other tips on their horses, and they weren’t the only pair doing that either. It was really cool to see competitors helping each other out.

That group of kids—Skylar, Gussie, Avery, Noah etc— are pretty tight and I can see that happening in other parts of the country. People don’t give teens nearly enough credit.

She’s pretty amazing and so hard working. Remember this? She was just 16 https://www.theplaidhorse.com/2021/09/29/skylar-wireman-junior-rider-by-day-roadside-mechanic-by-night/

No wonder he sent her that horse that turned out to be the winner at Fort Worth! Lol.

She seems like a very good sport, and that was 2 years ago when she was changing a tire for Nick Haness.

It’s nice that he admitted that he can’t change a tire, and recognized publicly that a young lady came to his rescue. Well done to them both. :+1:

It’s good to hear that the big EQ kids still have the grace and sportsmanship that I remember, and damn, those kids (they are “kids” to me) can ride. The future looks bright, we have some very impressive young people coming up.

Speaking of camaraderie.

In case anyone is interested, here’s a slideshow of the behind-the-scenes photos I took at our Maclay regionals in September.

Several familiar West Coast faces make an appearance, including the Wiremans, Archie Cox, Jim Hagman, Robert Ridland, and Tasha Visokay. Even on a day that can be a bit tense, the camaraderie comes through. Also, #groomsrock
