For the age-old "Best Leather Halter" debate - comparison pictures

I know we’ve discussed quite a bit on here who makes the best leather halters. I have for you new pictures comparing Ocala Tack Shack, Albright, and Quillin halters. I’ve voiced my opinion before on who has the best quality, but I’ll refrain from doing that here.

Tack Shack - Sale Halter with optional throat snap, custom ordered with double stitching (default is triple stitching everywhere) and fancy crown; $53.95 as ordered

Albright - Sale Halter with optional triple-stitched nose, throat snap, double-buckle crown, and English chin, custom ordered with fancy crown; $60.00 as ordered

Quillin - Sale Halter with optional throat snap; $58.95 as ordered ($71.45 for triple-stitched nose and English chin added)

All the halters were cleaned with Higher Standards soap prior to the photo shoot.

The Tack Shack halter looks almost black in these pictures, but it is indeed dark brown. This is also the oldest halter of the bunch, so it was probably lighter when it was new.

If you are paying attention to the plates at all, the Tack Shack halter (in older pics) has a plate from Halter Tags, while the other plates are from Quillin.

wait, my tack shack halters (sale halter) were $48.95+$5.00 and included triple stitched noseband (the track halter has the fancy stitched crown)…

(duh, just saw that you custom ordered double stitching, so to be precise, you asked for less stitching than the halter comes with for $48.95!)

 Yes, I guess I did pay for more than what I got in that regard!

I just edited to specify that the pricing I gave was “as ordered”. When I ordered from Tack Shack back in 2010 (on your recommendation ;)), I requested double stitching and a fancy crown (like on the track halter). At that time, they did not charge me extra for the fancy crown.

I had actually asked about a turnout halter (default is double stitching) and adding a rolled throat, but I was told the labor of the sale halter (and therefore the additional cost) is in the rolled throat, so to order a sale halter and request the double stitching.

I’m obsessed with my SmartPak triple stitched halters. The second one did come with a pinky/reddish tone to it but they are so supple right out of the bag. I have purchased 3 already - even better when they do free engraving. I’m pretty picky with leather halters, I hate the stiff/waxy cheap feeling ones. This is definitely not that!

…and you didn’t want the turnout halter, it’s a latigo style (or was at that time). Great for young colts to play tug o’war, but very little else!

I dug out that halter when I bought my fjord - the place he is at leaves halters on the fence line when they are out and the first thing that happened was the leather popper on the end of my lead rope was chewed… then his very nice sale halter came in slightly mangled (not too bad, than heavens)… so I found Lido’s dust and mildew encrusted old t/o halter (circa 2009 for last use and then ignored and abused), threw it in a bucket of water and scrubbed it clean(ish), wiped it down and put it back into service. Whoever the guilty party was, apparently they only liked chewing leather I cared about. The t/o halter remains untouched and sturdy as ever. YOU CAN’T KILL THEM!!!

Thanks for the side by side pictures. It is helpful to see the differences in stitching, leather thickness, etc.

TackShack caught my eyes the most.

I think the Albright looks great but I’m also just a big fan of triple stitched in general. Thanks for sharing!

I bought my Quillin halter 6-7 years ago, and it’s still going strong after everyday use with just the occasional clean and condition. Not sure which style it is, but it’s triple stitched all over(except the crown piece) and has an english chin and throat snap. I would absolutely purchase one again(should this one ever bite the dust).

I love my Quillin halters, but I don’t go with the triple stitched noseband.

Granted, this is in black and white, but I love my Tack Shack Halters!

I have been coveting these halters

I also like the rolled nose option for small headed horses. They are available at sstack and BigDee but this Ebay seller is related to Bartville tack, the Amish people who make Bit of Britain’s tack.

I’m partial to padded leather noses/crowns. I like Perri’s for that, and also because I get get aluminum/chrome hardware over brass.

Any other recomendations for good padded leather halters?

I use KY Tack for daily halters, and I swear by them, but my fancy shmancy show halters are Quillin and I really like them. However, that Albright halter is lovely!

Im buying an Albright halter next time. I just got a black with chrome halter made by the Amish for my grey and its stunning. I have a chestnut that would look great in the Albright though.
