For the folks interested in or loving their MIPS helmet.....a new central place. (Cross post)

After writing out an answer to the same or similar MIPS question over the weekend I got to thinking that there needs to be a central place for all MIPS studies, articles, links to the helmets themselves, links to sales and even the ability to sell a MIPS helmet that was purchased but that may not fit.

Most here know I am a Trauma Void lover, but my overall desire is to see more people wearing helmets (from ANY brand) equipped with the MIPS system. My own accident scared me into understanding the power of the MIPS system but for sure I have seen a LOT of other stories from Charles Owen users and the like explaining how much their own helmets are the reason that they’re alive, not gravely injured and so on.

So trying to be a part of ways to educate more people with facts, figures and such I created a landing spot for all of these things. On Facebook as it’s easiest to do so there. But it wouldn’t be hard to recreate in a website as well.

Please consider joining. Please come share your stories, pics of helmets, whatever MIPS related thing you feel passionate about sharing.

And yes we are happy to help folks sell their ill fitting MIPS helmet to someone else who may be looking as long as it hasn’t been fallen in etc.

We’re putting up articles as we find them. I am emailing the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab today to see how their helmet study is going or if they’re stuck in COVID limbo. I have a very nice person from Charles Owen putting me in contact with the developers of the MIPS system to be able to chat. And generally I want to use my former journalism research skills to give everyone as much info as they need to make the best decisions for their head.

So that’s my news. I hope to see you in the group.

Thank you for taking this on. I appreciate your work in this area as I believe it will help get more MIPs helmets onto equestrian noggins. A good thing! Just a thought: it would be very helpful to have a spreadsheet, perhaps a public Google doc, that lists the critical information about all of the MIPs helmets on the market. Critical information could include the basics such as certifications, but also the useful data that is frequently not on the retail sites, such as if it is more of an oval or round shape, fits true to size or runs small/large, and ventilation ratings.

I had a similar idea. I don’t have GOBS of free time but I will post an editable Google Sheet that can have info added from anyone.

Thanks, I’ll check out the FB group. I just got the Charles Owen Myps wide brim helmet. I look like a serious mushroom head but it fits my oval head well and has good sun protection so I’ll overlook my vanity. Neither of the Trauma Voids fit me well, I’m hoping One K comes out with theirs soon.

I have been in contact with the OneK rep and I have been told it’s moved to be released at the end of July or so.

(That’s been posted on the group as well)

We had a very exciting (relatively) day yesterday in that I was able to speak to Dr. Barry Miller from Virginia Tech about the progress and status of the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab’s all encompassing study on all riding helmets. There’s a couple files posted on the page about this but the short version is that USHJA and USEF are pushing it forward but some additionally fundraising is needed to get the study going. The study will reportedly cost $450k and the overall goal is to replace the ASTM standard with a 5 star certification system so that the consumers know more about their helmets and can buy with confidence and know that the better helmets truly are safer rather than just being all certified with one system that doesn’t establish which helmets met or barely met the standards.

But please come over and read what Dr. Miller says. It’s truly fascinating stuff.
