For the folks interested in or loving their MIPS helmets.....a central info place

After writing out an answer to the same or similar MIPS question over the weekend I got to thinking that there needs to be a central place for all MIPS studies, articles, links to the helmets themselves, links to sales and even the ability to sell a MIPS helmet that was purchased but that may not fit.

Most here know I am a Trauma Void lover, but my overall desire is to see more people wearing helmets (from ANY brand) equipped with the MIPS system. My own accident scared me into understanding the power of the MIPS system but for sure I have seen a LOT of other stories from Charles Owen users and the like explaining how much their own helmets are the reason that they’re alive, not gravely injured and so on.

So trying to be a part of ways to educate more people with facts, figures and such I created a landing spot for all of these things. On Facebook as it’s easiest to do so there. But it wouldn’t be hard to recreate in a website as well.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/MIPSHelmets/

Please consider joining. Please come share your stories, pics of helmets, whatever MIPS related thing you feel passionate about sharing.

And yes we are happy to help folks sell their ill fitting MIPS helmet to someone else who may be looking as long as it hasn’t been fallen in etc.

We’re putting up articles as we find them. I am emailing the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab today to see how their helmet study is going or if they’re stuck in COVID limbo. I have a very nice person from Charles Owen putting me in contact with the developers of the MIPS system to be able to chat. And generally I want to use my former journalism research skills to give everyone as much info as they need to make the best decisions for their head.

So that’s my news. I hope to see you in the group.

I love MIPS helmets. I promote them heavily as someone who has worked in tack stores. But no brand offers a real long oval fit, and that is limiting their customer base. The closest one is the MyPS but it’s not super oval, only oval-ish. Think more of a GR8 fit than an AYR8 fit.

Anyway, that’s an aside. Starting the FB group is a great idea and thank you for emailing Virginia Tech. Everyone will benefit.

Thank you.

I would suggest that the forthcoming OneK would be one that folks should look at as well, a LOT of long oval folks have mentioned OneK’s. Per their rep it will be out towards the end of this month.

I just ordered my first MIPS, the Tipperary Windsor wide brim. I like that it has a dial to help fit - I fitted one at the shop before ordering. I have leaned towards long oval fit before, but found this one worked for me when I tried it on - lets hope I am right. It was only $322 CAD tax in as they were on sale, which seems amazing to be able to have the new technology for that price! I have joined the group above as well. Interested to follow!

We had a very exciting (relatively) day yesterday in that I was able to speak to Dr. Barry Miller from Virginia Tech about the progress and status of the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab’s all encompassing study on all riding helmets. There’s a couple files posted on the page about this but the short version is that USHJA and USEF are pushing it forward but some additionally fundraising is needed to get the study going. The study will reportedly cost $450k and the overall goal is to replace the ASTM standard with a 5 star certification system so that the consumers know more about their helmets and can buy with confidence and know that the better helmets truly are safer rather than just being all certified with one system that doesn’t establish which helmets met or barely met the standards.

But please come over and read what Dr. Miller says. It’s truly fascinating stuff.

As much as I prefer the look of my Lady Samshield, I wear the not so elegant Trauma Void because I know I won’t look good drooling and being spoon-fed after my brain trauma injury.

Have you looked at the new Tipperary Windsor collection?

They’re at the very least similar in design to the Samshield Miss/Lady Samshield

I’m not on FB but now that the hot weather has arrived, I’m realizing what a poor fit my CO is. The MyPS helmets generally cover more of the head, and my helmet has been sitting so low on my brow lately that it pushes my glasses out of place. I reverted to my Ovation schooler, and it feels like a costume helmet after the CO.

I’m willing to buy a different brand and sell the CO, if I can. Any suggestions? As far as head shape, I was really happy with my Samshield.

There’s a couple brand reps on the group. I know you said you’re not on FB now but we have a pretty great group with the CO rep and some others as well.
