We have wood floor in our trailer, covered with texturized rubber mats (antislip mats) and then we cover that in a couple bales of kiln-dried shavings. The deeper footing is more comfortable on their legs and since we’re often hauling a mare with a foal, the foal can lay down during rest stops.

Yes shavings-
I like a mix of swift pick on the bottom layer and “horse show shavings” (the really large flake) on top- horse mixes it up and never slips. I trailer him without the partition in LOOSE and he moves around without issue-
Yes. We have a hawk with rumber. I have found that in the event they pee ( or rain gets in) it is less slippery. I use the large flakes of shavings, sparingly.
