For those of you with rumber floors in your trailer...

Do you use shavings?

My new Hawk just came in and I’m picking it up tomorrow, I’m so excited! I’ve never had rumber so I’m wondering if people use shavings or just go bare. I’ve always used shavings with my wood floors/mats.

Thanks

Yes

Enjoy your new trailer! I remember when I picked mine up in January, I was sooo excited, it was more exciting than buying my house !! Just something about buying horse trailers.

Take a lot of pictures, its nice to have pics in case you ever want to sell, many years down the road !!

We do. The first haul in ours was short and we didn’t but they pooped and it was really hard to scoop out with the rum bar. We hosed it out but still didn’t get it to good. After that we use shavings and everything stays nice and easy to get out.

I do NOT use shavings with my Rumber floor (Hawk).

I just hose and sweep to get the manure out

But I did NOT use shavngs in by previous (rubber mats, Gore) trailer either. WIth at least one of my horses, she is MORE likely to slip with shavings.

I remember reading an article in ??Quarter Horse Journal?? a few years back by a custom trailer builder and he said that shavings make it more slippery footing for horses. Think the old fashioned barn dance floors with shavings or sawdust sprinkled on them…That being said I still use them to soak up urine. I am also aware of the “dust” factor. I do feel that Rumber floors reduce the potential slippage when shavings are used.

Thanks for your responses, it would be easier if you would all just agree! LOL

I picked it up today and it is huge! Tomorrow I’m trailering my horse in it and I still haven’t decided if I want to use sawdust or not.

No.

They can breath in tiny shavings/sawdust particles.

Also, if you build it, it/they will come. Shavings, horse, poop, and pee. Poop, pee, flies. Poop, pee, flies, what a stinky mess. You build it, also you will have to have wheelbarrows, they must come to clean it out.

It is like carpet in a house. You put in by the yard, and take it out by the pound.

Yes, always use some bedding like sawdust or shavings. Wet rubber or planks is like ice. I’ve seen horses loose their footing, always the hinds, when following trailers.

I do have Rumber floors in my trailer.

Sawdust no unless dampened, some shavings yes, will keep the floor from getting slick when wet unless of course it is left wet and smushed… urine cannot drain on Rumber so something to absorb a bit and lesson splashing would be a good thing

The BO here uses straw. Not as dusty, doesn’t blow.

We have a plain 16’ GN stock trailer and urine drains between rumbar boards just as it does wood ones.
We don’t use anything and don’t seem to have any problem with slipping?
To clean, we let everything dry and sweep it.
If cattle made a mess, we may have to use a long handled brush on the inside walls if it dried up.

Our new Logan has Rumber but the slats are slightly slanted so it can drain quicker. Then mats on top, and yes DH beds with shavings. I didn’t like it when we first started dating, and he had a stock trailer that he bedded with shavings (I don’t put anything in my 2h). But I think it doesn’t blow much in an enclosed trailer.

But since it’s his choice to bed, he has to muck it out.

Bluey - you may have Rumber cleat boards? instead of Rumber tongue & groove boards that are used (usually) in horse trailers

I guess so, is what is used here I assume.

I through some shavings down to absorb any urine and make scooping out a little easier. I find it much easier to work with then just the bare floor.

I use shavings to abosrb urine and sometimes soft poop. I have a horse who won’t pee if she gets splashed, so shavings are a must. I also think it looks more inviting (brighter) to walk into a trailer with a layer of clean shavings vs the black rumbar or mats alone. I do clean it out Every Single Use, and completely strip and powerwash the trailer every spring.

I’m not familiar with Rumber, I’ve never seen a trailer with it to my knowledge. How much cushion does it offer?
I have Pro Cushion mats under my regular mats and it offers quite a bit of cushion as well as dampens vibration. (At least that is what is was billed as doing)
My average haul, with two to three pretty big Warmbloods, is about 10 hours and they do really well.
