Ad says homed! I hope it’s a good one.
How cruel she ended up where she did - this is why you don’t sell or rehome your retirees, yall. Even if that’s not what happened to HER, if a horse like that ends up there…
Excellent. She was still available just an hour ago, so social media worked its good magic.
Also hoping that means she has a good, soft landing! DH and I bought property and are building a small farm so my retiree, and the current show horse, can be home forever. Was going to say if this lady could catch a ride to Virginia Beach, she can join my guys!
How sad! Good thing they scanned her for a chip. Shame on the people that allowed her to get into this condition, and then to dump her.
I followed your link and I’m glad she found a, hopefully good, home. Maybe one of her previous connections. Based on the microchip information I think this is her:
I had to look at progeny of dam to find her.
Yes, according to her USEF record that’s her.
I saw on FB that she is returning to her original breeder, who is already arranging for vet care before she leaves.
Great news.
That’s wonderful news! I can only imagine the heartbreak her breeder and prior connections are probably feeling.
Here’s the update, if anybody can help with a quarantine facility in Texas, please contact the owner. They are not asking for money, just a connection.
This is sickening. It’s horrible when it happens to any horse but when it happens to a quality animal like this that obviously at one point sold for a lot of $$, it really makes me wonder. Of course I know she’s not the first one. I remember seeing the thread about the olympic horse that ended up in a kill pen a while ago and got rescued thanks to COTH. it would be interesting to back track her and find out how this happened.
Maybe contact Brazos Valley Equine? I know they have a good facility in Salado but they also have some facilities closer to Houston (would be on the way to Fla)
She was previously donated to a big collegiate equestrian program. Who knows what happened after to get her to this point. We don’t deserve these animals.
FB post has been updated. A place has been found and she’s getting picked up tomorrow.
I’ve heard more than one story of horses donated to college programs being discarded when they’re no longer useful.
Which program?
Definitely. Need to make sure they don’t get more horses. I hate to make a guess without confirmation and put a name out there but I"m betting I’m right.
I have heard the same. These programs have no desire or ability to maintain a retiree herd, generally. Best case, the college program sends the retirees back to their old owners, and those owners have the means to retire the horses. That just isn’t typical.
To be fair, the alleged college program could have responsibly rehomed this horse and someone else failed her. But it is very easy for lesson strings to fall through the cracks when they are no longer useful.
As I said earlier - no one will care for your retired horse as much as you will.
While I 100% agree that you have to be really careful when you donate a horse to a program, there are many that absolutely do right by their horses, whether with a retirement herd or placing them with former students who want them. I would imagine it will eventually come out whether it was the school or a subsequent owner who failed this poor mare. I’m so relieved she is being reunited with Robin, who will make sure she gets all the care she needs.
I am so glad her breeder found her and stepped in. People often get a big tax break when they donate a horse (usually a sale would not bring in much money) which is often why they do it…not out of the goodness of their heart for the program.
