Forums showing unread posts even thought I've marked the channel as 'read'

More annoying than anything else…

I now have 2 forums (Missing Horses and Frequently Asked Questions) where the little blue ‘message’ (whatever it is called) that is displayed next to the forum name in the main forums list shows unread posts (i.e., blue, not grey) but the forum doesn’t actually have any unread posts.

I’ve marked the channel as read numerous times but the blue doesn’t go away. FAQ has been that way for months. Missing Horses just started acting like that.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I do not. Are others noticing this issue?

Yup! Have seen that issue with the FAQ forum since the update.

At least I’m not the only one… definitely is strange

Just checked–I have the same problems with the Missing Horse forum. Also the Reference and Favorites forums.

BUT if you use the “mark channels read” at the bottom of this page (the main forum page) that does mark everything read and the blue “I’m new” indicator goes away for everything.

I’ll have to try that once I’ve read all the forums I usually read so I don’t loose any unread topics.

The individual forum Mark sure doesn’t do the trick. Interesting one of yours is the same as mine, Missing… but my other one is the FAQ one

I’ll post an update once I’ve done this.

I did the Mark Channels Read at the higher level forum list and yes, Missing and FAQ are no longer blue (but then again neither is anything else

We’ll see if this sticks but would like to know why the Mark This Channel Read doesn’t clear the blue for some forums but the Mark Channels does…

Wonder if this is a vBulletin nit (I might go trolling there when I’m a bit more inspired  ).

Interesting–do you not have the same problem for the Reference and Favorites forum, @Where’sMyWhite ? I assumed it was something funny caused by the limited permissions. Maybe not!

@Simkie , honestly, I don’t know as I often don’t scroll down that far to even see either of those forums.

I know my funky behavior with FAQ started shortly after the conversion to vBulletin. The funky behavior with Missing happened just a few days ago (after Jan 8th).

Now that I’ve “reset” all the forums, I’ll keep an eye on Reference and Favorites and see if anything pops up.

Unlikely they’ll ever turn blue again–those are restricted posting forums. I think it’s that restriction that’s causing the hangup with the read indicator.

What’s also irksome about that read indicator is every thread can be read–but the indicator is still blue. On the regular (non-restricted) forums, the ONLY way to turn it to “nothing new here” is to use the “mark forum read” link. I’d think that it should change when all the threads have been read :-/.

Maybe an associated “weirdness” (technical term here  ).

When I am on the main forum page (that shows all the forums and the thread that was most recently posted on, I click on the forum and discover that the thread shown on the main page as most recent is the second post on the list; a different post is the actual most recent. It doesn’t appear to be a timing thing as even the most recent thread may be several minutes old.

Go to the link with main forums list, pick forum with thread shown, forum list shows a more recent post even though that recent post is “old” (i.e., before I got to the main forum list).

I’ll have to start watching time stamps on this bad boy

Yeah, wmw, that’s been consistent since the upgrade. Made all the bug lists from the beginning but no updates on that one…

Just based on gut feeling, this last one is probably a vBulletin thing and not a COTH forum thing… sigh

Don’t remember seeing this in any of the problems reported but that does’t mean much sometimes.

Interestingly, all of the unread indicators on the main forum page are blue again–even those in forums like FAQs and Favorites, that have no new posts and are not open for posting. They must reset somehow? Curious.

Right you are but …

I read the new topic in Missing, marked the channel as read and the little box is now grey.

Not so lucky with FAQs. Entered the FAQ, marked the channel as read and the little box is still grey.

 + sigh

Oh, say. Check this out, WMW.

That way you can get the stubborn restricted posting forums to show no read, without having to mark all of the discussion forums read.
