Found a Saddle Finally!

I posted some months ago that I was having an awful time finding a saddle to fit my narrow Spanish Mustang gelding. Last summer I got the “cards” and got his measurements to the owner of Stonewall Saddles who is a friend. She was looking for something for him but didn’t even have a tree that would fit him at the time…would have had to be a custom tree even. So being not rich, I decided to hold off a bit on making a decision.

The owner of Stonewall Saddlery, Jackie Feneroli, contacted me a few weeks ago that she had a used saddle that would probably work for Maverick. She had gotten in an old saddle to be fixed up and ended up rebuilding it on the older tree…so it’s essentially new but for the tree. She also installed a rock shim to make it fit his back perfectly. I thought I’d share a pic of my boy with it on the first time. It is the ONLY saddle I’ve ever been able to use on him with a zillion thick pads to keep it off his withers and that actually matches his narrow withers and shoulder and doesn’t bridge on him. I’m thrilled!

To make it even better, I love this saddle. It lets me sit as I wish in a balanced seat position as I hate being forced into a pocket like many western style saddles do. I love it’s lightness and how well thought out it is. The girth adjusts to nearly any build also and is rigged a lot like the old McClellan’s.

I can’t recommend Jackie and Stonewall Saddles more after this experience! I’m looking forward to having a well fitting proper saddle for my boy this season and hopefully some distance riding in the future!

It’s not his best pose but you get a good look at the saddle.

Isn’t it great to finally get a saddle that fits a hard-to-fit horse?? Congrats-it looks great on him and I bet it is comfortable for you both and easy to throw up there.

Love the horse too-I’ve always wanted a horse that looks like that, just looks so forward and energetic like he wants to go somewhere!

Thanks Coyboymom! I love this horse too. He’s a sweet guy too and more like a dog than a horse.

It is very light…12 lbs I think. I love it. I have an english background so less saddle rather than more does not bother me. I prefer it.

Fantastic! Like!

GREAT ! ENJOY !!!

Thanks!

How was your ride today in that new saddle ?

Yes! I know how you feel about your new saddle! I just got a Specialized saddle. I’m a dressage rider that’s doing more and more trail riding, on top of preparing for Combined driving… The Specialized Saddle puts me in a nice dressage seat and is easy to keep my position.
What happened to your guy’s tail?

I had a great ride Zuzu!

Go ponies…that is just his genetics. He’s an old type appaloosa Spanish Mustang. I’ll wager he’s a lot like the original indian type. Rat tails used to be very common but the addition of all the non appy blood seems to have really diluted the old gene for rat tails.

You should see him when he runs…he sticks his tail right up in the air. It’s hilarious!

Great update ~ so thrilled for you and your handsome lad ~!

Saddles are difficult to find  and just when you give up ```there it is !!!
SO glad you found the saddle and your ‘boy’ is ready to run again !

ENJOY !!! :cool::)

Thanks ZuZu! I can’t wait to hit the trails this summer with such a nice saddle on my boy! Having had to “make do” all last year I was a bit worried about finding something that would fit that I could afford. The Stonewall is a very nice saddle with many nice features and probably was my dream saddle anyway…so I’m still just pinching myself. I can’t recommend Jackie at Stonewall more highly for her help in getting my saddle problems resolved.

I want to get one of these for my husband also now we have my hard to fit horse covered.

It looks very comfortable. Congrats on finding a saddle.

So how is this saddle working out? Do you know which model it is? The stirrups look forward, do you have any trouble posting? There isn’t much to this saddle, do you feel secure in it?

I need to find a trail saddle for my very spooky Icelandic. I like how close it sits to the horse, and Stonewall is only a couple of hours away from me, I’m seriously considering it.

Thanks!

Thanks simbalism! It is a nice feeling to finally have a saddle that fits my boy!

Malda, to answer your questions. The stirrups hang pretty much straight down and I have no trouble posting at all. It is much harder to post in my Abetta. This saddle rides more like a nice dressage saddle and you can sit nicely on your pelvis. it does not push you onto your pockets. It’s the Classic model. I wish it had a tad more cushion under me but i’m going to get a sheepskin seat saver and that should do the trick. I’m pretty sensitive on my backside for some reason so that may be me and not the saddle. It has a nice foam on the seat.

I find it very secure but I “grew up” riding in english saddles so that may be why. I love the minimalist feel to it and my horse moves freely and comfortably in it. I can rise trot or sit trot equally well in it.

I would contact Jackie Fenaroli and see if she can let you test ride one of hers. If she’s that close maybe you could hook up and ride with her?

I also started riding in English saddles, so I was thinking I’d feel insecure with knee rolls, it’s a very minimal saddle.

I’m one of those women who has a terrible body for riding. I have a 6" pelvis (I’ve measured) so I’m too wide for most saddles, and I have a very tilted pelvis, so half my weight is on my seat bones, the other half on my crotch. Most saddles are what I call “crotch killers”, in fact I’m sore right now from a 2 hour trail ride. I also need a narrow twist so my hips aren’t bothered. It’s easier to find a saddle for my horse than it is me.

Malda,

I thought I’d miss knee rolls too but I really don’t that much. I prefer not having them now I’ve gotten used to it. You are free to put your leg where ever you want.

I tend to get my crotch rubbed too. Makes me wonder if I have some of your issues. I’ve not been able to go out long enough yet in this saddle to know for sure how it will affect me that way, but I think I’ll be Ok. The seat is very flat compared to the Abetta and even my Wintec (which I hate to trail ride in).

Good luck!

Congrats! Took me a year, but I too, finally found a saddle that fit my short-backed & scoopy Clyde-X, a County Perfection dressage saddle. I ADORE IT!!!

Okay, second time trying to post. Anyone else having problems posting?

Here are some sites about women and saddles. I’m pretty sure I have the lordotic frame, most saddles hurt. And the western style ones that sit (normal people) on your pockets throw me off balance, I’ve never been able to ride in a western saddle. This seems to be new research so I hope more companies make saddles for women (cheaper!).

Schleese may fit the women, but I have seen some of the most damaged and hurt backs on horses from them, they are also very heavy, maybe that is the main reason but I doubt it. They are also obscenely expensive.

Love it! It looks like a very nice, lightweight endurance type saddle. Just the thought that the saddler went the extra mile for your boy is awesome! Congratulations. There is nothing like the peace of mind knowing that your tack fits like it should.
