I posted some months ago that I was having an awful time finding a saddle to fit my narrow Spanish Mustang gelding. Last summer I got the “cards” and got his measurements to the owner of Stonewall Saddles who is a friend. She was looking for something for him but didn’t even have a tree that would fit him at the time…would have had to be a custom tree even. So being not rich, I decided to hold off a bit on making a decision.
The owner of Stonewall Saddlery, Jackie Feneroli, contacted me a few weeks ago that she had a used saddle that would probably work for Maverick. She had gotten in an old saddle to be fixed up and ended up rebuilding it on the older tree…so it’s essentially new but for the tree. She also installed a rock shim to make it fit his back perfectly. I thought I’d share a pic of my boy with it on the first time. It is the ONLY saddle I’ve ever been able to use on him with a zillion thick pads to keep it off his withers and that actually matches his narrow withers and shoulder and doesn’t bridge on him. I’m thrilled!
To make it even better, I love this saddle. It lets me sit as I wish in a balanced seat position as I hate being forced into a pocket like many western style saddles do. I love it’s lightness and how well thought out it is. The girth adjusts to nearly any build also and is rigged a lot like the old McClellan’s.
I can’t recommend Jackie and Stonewall Saddles more after this experience! I’m looking forward to having a well fitting proper saddle for my boy this season and hopefully some distance riding in the future!
It’s not his best pose but you get a good look at the saddle.
