Four stallions killed in Peru - from TDN

Th”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹![](s just horrible. The night watchman was murdered as well.

Four stallions at Haras Barlovento in Canete, Peru were killed by intruders Sunday, who apparently broke into the farm with the express purpose of killing The Lieutenant (Street Sense), Cyrus Alexander (Medaglia d’Oro), Timely Advice (A.P. Indy) and Kung Fu Mambo (Arg) (Giant’s Causeway), the farm reported on Instagram this morning.

“With lot of pain, we share the sad news of the murder of the four stallions of Barlovento recently at our farm in Cañete,” the post said. “They reduced the watchman and went straight to kill Cyrus Alexander, The Lieutenant, Timely Advice and Kung Fu Mambo. They had one intention and they have succeeded.”

The Lieutenant, a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy), was covering the Southern Hemisphere season and was about to return to Sequel Stallions in New York; Cyrus Alexander won the GIII Lone Star Park H., and Kung Fu Mambo was one of the best horses of his crop in Peru, winning the G1 Derby Nacional. He was an easy winner of his US debut in a Santa Anita allowance in June of 2015, but was injured and retired after the race. Timely Advice was an established stallion in Peru.

Barlovento’s owner Boris Schwartzman relayed the news to Sequel’s Becky Thomas this morning.

“Our hearts are broken,” said Thomas. “Boris is a phenomenal person, and there’s nothing you can say that is going to make him feel better. The only information that I know was that his night watchman was shot, and all four stallions were murdered. That’s the word he used; murdered.”

Sounds like a professional hit…interesting.

How horrible.

So sad. Hopefully they find the people that did this.

Awful!! Motive??? I’m scratching my head as to who would benefit, other than the beneficiary of an insurance policy, and that policy would not pay out without an exhaustive investigation. With the beneficiary being the top suspect.

Maybe some intricate plot to reinstate Nicole Walker!!!

It sounds like someone really has it in for Boris Schwartzman. How terrible and cruel.

There are some lovely photos of The Lieutenant on his farm website.http://www.sequelnewyork.com/the-lieutenant
How could anyone do such a thing?

Four stallions and a human who was guarding and caring for them. I hope they solve this horrible crime.

They evidently butchered them for meat. Same thing happened a few years ago to a really sweet stallion I knew personally called Drilling For Oil :frowning:

I also saw that rumor–I don’t know if it’s been substantiated. It doesn’t appear to make much sense.

There are many backyard horses that would have been significantly easier to get to than these 4 stallions who had a guard that needed to be taken out first. Plus, it takes time to butcher a horse (not to mention four of them) and I would think that the sound of gunshots would have brought someone running.

Hopefully they will solve this horrible crime and release more information.

I agree. There are easier horses to get to if they only wanted the meat.

It makes no sense for people to target guarded horses and kill the guard if they were only after horse meat. The article said nothing about the horses being butchered.

It’s the Paulick website that is reporting that the stallions were killed with axes for the purpose of “harvesting their meat for sale”. I have no words. https://www.paulickreport.com/news/b…asion-in-peru/

People are butchering horses in Florida as well. It’s a terrible thing.

The article said they were killed for meat but that doesn’t make sense. Could they have been killed in that way to make it look like it was for meat? There are a lot of horses easier to get and that don’t require killing a human being if all you want is meat.

Just horrifying and so very sad. I saw Michael McCarthy’s tweet about The Lieutenant (McCarthy was his trainer) and it made me cry. I can’t imagine what all of the people connected to these horses are feeling. :frowning:

Something doesn’t sound right to me either. There were no mares that would be a lot easier to take if you just wanted meat on the hoof? Without knowing any of the people involved, it sounds very personal. See what we did to you–whoever the you was.

The other thought I have is that this is the second time in a short period of time that Peru has had this problem. (See Drilling For Oil) Maybe this is all of the chances Peru should get with American bloodstock.

So far that is the only article I’ve found that includes that scenario.

I can’t really imagine anyone using an axe to butcher a horse for meat, unless the actual quarters were taken

Even then, It doesn’t make sense to target these animals. I’m no expert about Peru, but I would guess there are easier targets.

What is the political/economic situation there?

There were a bunch of wealthy folks with expensive horses there for the Pan Am Games not that long ago. I’m leaning toward anger at wealthy people in general or a personal vendetta.

This is so awful.

I, too, remain skeptical about the “butchered for meat” scenario.

If you had a gun and were willing to shoot someone because you were hungry, why wouldn’t you rob a market? That would be a whole lot easier than doing this.

I would lean more towards cartel/politico than hunger.
