Fox holes - help!

I absolutely love the two foxes that hang out in our pasture (even though they drive my dog crazy). But lately I’ve been having problems with them digging fairly deep, hoof size holes in our sand ring. Is there anything I can do to help deter them from digging in the ring? Thanks!

It sounds like they are going after something (mice, etc) that are burrowing under your sand ring. Foxes hunt more by sound than sight since their normal prey are the tiny vermin that live under cover. If you watch a fox hunt, you will see them walk a few paces, then stand still, cocking their heads often to listen for the tiny scrabble of mice that are out of sight. That is the only reason they dig, other than taking over and enlarging a groundhog hole to make into a fox den.

You might want to drag your ring more often, and drag it deep, to discourage the mice, voles, moles from making their runways under the sand base. If you can get rid of the vermin, the foxes won’t bother hunting in your ring.
