Foxes as the Prefect Pet

On NPR a few minutes ago, the lead story is about an archeologic dig in Jordan that found a burial site with a person and his (?) pet red fox snuggled up together. It predates domestication of dogs and other species.

The cover of National Geographic magazine, March 2011, has a beautiful red fox on it.

“Designing the Perfect Pet”

The story is on the genetics of dometication. The fox is from Siberia and is golden retriever like in temperment. The other characteristics of domestication are present.

The science project began back in the Stalin era or earlier. Mendelian science was not politically correct then or in some of the following regimes. The story of how the fox breeding continued is fascinating. The current foxes are breath takingly beautiful. The U.S. is involved in the project. There is interest in placing the domesticated foxes in private homes as pets.

I want a fox!!:D:D:D

I just heard that on the way back from late lunch/early dinner! I have plans for the new crop of cubs sure to be arriving here within the next few weeks

I can’t wait to get in touch with the researchers!
Our local red foxes are so brilliant, and they adjust to the situations around them. Of course, the ones that aren’t end up getting the Darwin Award…

I do want to know what the living arrangement requirements are to keep them safe. Then there are the special certifications that will be required by the Powers That Be.
Can’t wait to see what JSwan has to say.
