Foxhound re-home?

I’m posting here, but will also post on the Menagarie Forum.

My sister has been a beagle lover/owner for 25+ years and is looking for a new member of her family. She has adopted her last 3 dogs through a beagle rescue and just lost one that came to her with undiagnosed medical problems. It was pretty traumtic. She and her husband are looking again, but are leaning toward a Foxhound as a new buddy for their remaining 4 yr. old beagle, “Lola”.

Could anyone point me in the right direction if there are hunts that place hounds that may not cut it in the hunt field? Is there such a practice?

She’s coming to visit me within the next month, so I said I’d investigate this for her.

Most hunts will allow their members to re-home a hound that is to be retired due to age, lack of drive, or other issue. If a healthy, able hound isn’t working out for a hunt, they are usually donated to another hunt’s kennels for their use (and it brings in new bloodlines).

That being said, I don’t know of a lot of hunts that allow someone they do not know to take a retiring hound.

Most non-hunt people that I know that have a foxhound got it from PetFinder.com.

Hmmm…

Our Hunt has several that may be up for adoption. 3, I believe are retirees and one is a 9 month old spayed female that won’t make the team. We’re in New England which may make an exchange difficult but??? If you’re interested, PM me.

I am a member and adopted one… can not believe how absolutely fabulous this hound is. I’m not sure I’ll go back to Labs after having a hound. Although the Lab/Hound pack (I have two) seem to be ideal.

I would think with references, you should be able to rehome a hound.

Our hunt, also in New England, has a couple hounds for adoption as well. The home must be approved, however, but if you believe your sister would provide a loving home, then that probably isn’t a problem.

IMHO, most of your local hunts DO and WILL give hounds away to good homes like yours. Simply contact them! PM me and I’ll put you in touch. This time of year (cubbing season) some of the younger ones aren’t working out and might be needing homes. Some hounds just don’t get it. It’s good timing. Also, I’m a member of the Ashland Bassets here in Warrenton and we usually have bassets that need a couch and some company!

Oh, Please WG! Don’t tell me/us about bassets that are available! Wonder if I could convince DH that George the Basset needs a Georgette?? Are they the French hunting bassets? Noooooooooo I don’t want to know!

As far as a good home? I wish I lived as well as my sister’s (and my) dogs do.:lol:

She and her husband just spent $2,500 trying to give their new rescue “a chance” when it became obvious he had some chronic intestinal disorder that suddenly went “south”. Upon opening him up, many of his organs were displaced and 80% of his intestine was necrotic, so he had to be put down. And she doesn’t regret one dime for the effort. Really sad for them and such a shocker.
