Foxhunters what is your opinion on him for the sport?

I don’t know. Do you think he is a little to laid back and fat?

WOW! What a specimen!

Tell us more…

His name is Nanooka. He is half Arctic half Red fox. He lives a very spoiled life as a house pet. I got him many years ago, and then had to give him to my mother as it turns out I am allergic to him!

Spoiled bugger won’t even eat raw meat. Has to be cooked and seasoned. Will do anything for bread and will steal your Kalua drinks without spilling a drop!

I WANT HIM

Haha, I came in expecting a post of another “foxhunter prospect” horse.

He’s so freakin’ cute though! How did you acquire him? I’m thinking he likes the life of luxury!

If you want a fox make sure to get it as a baby. We got him when he was a bit older and was not handled other then being tied out on a chain so he was a bit more difficult for the first 2 years to trust people alot and to litter box trained.

They are like a cross between a dog and a cat. We always called him the cadog.

How cool - I’ve never heard of anyone making a pet out of a fox ! We would all be interested in hearing more details. He is beautiful. How old is he now ?

Hmmm I think he is around 9 or 10 years old. A girl had him for sale and the guy I was dating at the time bought him for me since I always wanted a fox. He was suppose to be only 4 months old but it turned out he was around a year at the time. You can teach them to use a litter box just like a cat and he lives on dog food and people food. He knows how to sit and stand up on his legs to be ‘pretty’.

Yes, he does live the good life doesn’t he?

Foxes make great pets if you get them young enough. There are actually quite a few breeders in the US that breed domestic bottle raised foxes.

I figured you guys would like the photos!

They’re handsome animals, aren’t they?

Are they mean at all? I know you can make pets out of bobcats if you get them young, but they occasionally will take a bite out of you when they get annoyed.

He was not very friendly when we got him. But then again I wouldn’t be if I was kept in a chicken cage on a chain and only drug out to show him off. He has come along way and will just grunt or make an odd noise and leave if you make him mad.

Good one. Like the others I was kinda expecting to see a Gypsy Vanner-Shetland-Mustang-Lippizan cross horse to examine.

Can Nanooka be turned out in the yard and if so, does he stay?? Do you walk him on a leash??

My mother turns him out on one of those long cable runs. Though he has gotten loose before and always went back to the house for his dinner.

Nope not one of those posts about an odd cross breed for hunting. I am a TB person all the way. I would love to go on a hunt but none in my area and I don’t think Nanooka wants to play real fox!

Does he enjoy being petted?

Yes. Petted, groomed. Doesn’t like baths though

That is so cool! I want one! Would be nice if I could train it to run around our fixture and then hop back in my vehicle. Give the hounds a merry chase!

Here it is for all you guys that want one of your own…

I’m not sure if I agree with having a fox as a pet. Wild animals deserve to be wild… that’s my honest opinion. Not trying to flame here.

That same site you posted is also listing a gorilla for sale. That IMHO is just wrong… and isn’t it illegal too? Could you imagine when it gets full grown? Never mind the chimp incident a few weeks ago, a gorilla would destroy a house and you in the process. Not ok.

No worries about me thinking you are flamming me. Nanooka is a cross between two kinds of foxes so he is not even a ‘natural’ fox. I’m one of those people that thinks if you want to keep a certain animal as a pet you better have the place to do it. A gorilla for example (no way in heck could you pay me to even go near one!) you should have a complete habitat built for it.

I would love a wallaby in the future. BUT until we have a place in the country where we can build both a large outdoor habitat for it and in indoor one that isn’t going to happen.

Tried the whole building a ‘natural area’ for Nanooka. He hated the outdoors until he was much much older and even still it is only so that he can lay in the sun. I was throwing his ball for him when we got him and a mouse ran accross the floor. He chose the ball

I want a one too! Just showed DH the pictures and he groaned and walked away. Said the one dog looks enough like a fox - I think he’s going to be ignoring me for awhile now! But my birthday is comining up, hmmm…

So cute!

Any “guard dog” tendencies?
