Foxhunting and hunter pace - I think I may have found my new passion

In the last couple of weeks, I have done my first foxhunt and my first hunter pace. I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed myself so much! No show/competition pressures. No politics. Just outright fun! Even my daughter enjoyed herself and asked when we can do another hunter pace.

I don’t know what took me so long to give this a try!!! I just had to tell ‘someone’ what a great time I’ve had - so CoTH became that ‘someone’. I hope you don’t mind

Yeah!! Another convert!!!

Welcome!

Wahoo-Waa! Pass the Koolaid! Now you understand why we are so happy to welcome you to the fold!

You do need to know how to ride, but then it is pure joy and sharing the happiness… And it costs less to do than the competition stuff, with opportunities 3 times a week, for 6 months in Va. Plus, you can go around the world on hunt clubs, just like sailing clubs.

Come to Va when your season is over- We love company.

It’s the greatest, isn’t it? Hunting is definitely the most fun I’ve had on a horse, and I am quite sure my horses would say it’s their favorite activity. My retired show hunter, who is older than dirt, is pokey and bored in the ring, but out hunting he is full of go (and then some). There is nothing like hound music and a good gallop on a beautiful fall morning. Enjoy!

I have an 11 yo TB that is my forever horse. He ‘would’ make a lovely hunter but he HATES ring work. So the last couple of years all I’ve done is hack him. Now I think I have a job for him. He was fabulous on the hunt, but he ‘loved’ the hunter pace. Although he seemed to tire slightly about midway - he got his second wind to finish at a good clip. He was alert and interested the entire pace. I think this is his niche.

Unfortunately for me, most hunter paces are a couple of hours away minimum :frowning: Fortunately I have a local hunt and will try to make it there again soon.

Congratulations on finding a joyful place in riding! I’m very much a newbie, and have only been out hunting a couple of times, on wonderful made horses at Hunter’s Rest. It certainly does sound as though your forever horse may have found his niche, and you will enjoy getting him fit to hunt. Have a great time, and perhaps I’ll see you one day on a CotH hunt in VA.

I guess my saying will be, better late than never.
