Foxtrotters

Anyone else have a foxtrotter? I have a lovely foxtrotter mare. She is super calm and quiet and very affectionate. I don’t know anyone with a foxtrotter so I’m not sure if those characteristics are classic for the breed. We both got tangled in some nasty vines on one of our rides- she froze and carefully backed out. The time i tripped over the hose and nearly faceplanted, again she just froze.

The first time I took her to the beach, she walked right in the water even on a really rough day. Everything i ask her to do, she does. I just cannot say how impressed i am with this mare.

Please post pictures of your foxtrotters!

I have 2 and have owned 3 total. They are an in your pocket horse and always want to be your best friend. They also tend to be very level headed and basically are the type to spook in place and the ones that I have known if they get into trouble will just calmly let you help them. A friend had one slip and fall while being ridden, she just laid there and waited for us to help her. My gelding who can ahem be dumb  got himself in between the corral fence and the fence to my back yard and waited patiently for me to rescue him despite being stuck in a tight situation. I love the breed.

Not mine & no pics, but a friend has 2.
One is her liver chestnut sweetheart & has taken her on weeklong camping trips cross country, been the Friend Horse for guests & provided uncounted rides for the grandkids.
He is in his 20s now & retired to pasture as friend & DH can no longer ride.

The other was her Horse of Choice when trailriding, but a 180 in temperament from the other.
Solid black, crabby as all getout (bite & kick - people & other horses) & rideable only by friend.
But for her - once she reestablished who was in charge - the most reliable on trails.
Also now retired & she managed to locate the original owner (bought horse at auction) who verified he was sold due to temper.

Sounds like you have a great horse. I don’t think it is a breed trait but more likely just a good solid citizen. They come in every breed.

Lucky you just happened to get one. Enjoy your riding

I have a paint x foxtrotter that never foxtrotted. In fact, she is 14. 1 1/2 and was a lovely hunter-type mover. Brave to the jumps, great on trails, and perfect ground manners. She’s 20 now and babysitting a yearling.

I have known two, both geldings. One is a great trail horse with good ground manners. The other one was a basket case, failed as a show horse and not the right attitude for a trail horse, but I think that was due to his two owners. Both horses were nearly 16 hands. So, my very limited experience of MFTs is 50% positive, 50% meh.

I have a 21 yo MFT gelding …he has always been a dream to ride down on my place alone, he’s been on pergolide for about 4 mos and now has started really fighting me to come back to the barn…just wondering if the pergolide could have anything to do with his change…Also, I just discontinued the pergolide just to see if it would affect him…He does have Cushings, but so far the only symptom is the shaggy hair…

Toesin you live near me. I’m in Alachua. Want to go to San Felasco sometime?

That is a nice video. What park is that? Very narrow trail.

That is Bay Bill Slot canyon on the eastern edge of Zion National Park. It’s not inside the park, but just outside the boundary. That gelding has a lot of miles under saddle, and that kind of stuff doesn’t bother him. You can hear my saddle bags scrap as we kinda get stuck in Wild Horse Wash in the San Rafael Swell. This is over near Goblin Valley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQiYB9burkQ&t=9s
