Fredericks and Equine Canada are parting ways

Or one co owned by the EC president…

How is that not a conflict of interest!
His wife is Australian.

interesting comment from a mother of one of CF’s working students, posted on horse-Canada.com:
"I was asked by, several Equine Canada members, how my daughter liked being a working student for Clayton and what I thought of his coaching. I had been to Clayton’s training session on the west coast and had seen his interaction with riders.
My response: Clayton has a vast knowledge of horses and he has improved my daughter’s riding by his coaching and by allowing her the opportunity to ride some upper level horses. However Clayton is not a Team coach the words that need to come out of a Team coaches mouth are we, us and our not I,me or mine. The response from the EQ member was “yes if you asked David O’Conner what he did he would tell you he was the coach of the Canadian team first or second if you asked Clayton it was well down his list.
This is very much an individual sport and to bring together a team is very difficult. There are also several riders who need think a little more carefully about their contribution and expectation of a Team Canada. Canada can finish in 12 place just as well without them as we can with them.

bolded last two sentences by me … I wonder what or who that is hinting at.

I have to agree with that mothers statement though.

Watching 3 students who switched to CF as their new coach last year, and seeing their improvement over the last year. I say he’s done a wonderful job. Saying that though, out of those 3 students, 2 have purchased 3 horses from him in the last 2 years. So maybe its because of the amazing horses, could be because of the coaching.

One student has really grown under his coaching. They are also very blinded by what he has done to Team Canada over the last 4 years. He’s a very crude mane, with very little professional manners.

I honestly thought in the beginning he would do well, but as it began to unfold, nope. He was very disliked very quickly. He’s very self absorbed as we all know.

The fact that he dragged an 18 year old along to make her believe she could go to the olympics and then in the last chance she had, he didn’t even try to help her out by giving her the right direction that a coach should. Watching it with my own eyes, her world crashing down that she worked so hard for, because he truly didn’t care. Shocks me. It was a long shot we all knew that, but how he handled it, was disgusting. In the end, he still has her as a client… which shocks me, and they still think he’s amazing, even after all is said and done with Team Canada.

Makes my jaw drop that these 3 riders still think the sun shines out of his A**.

I love hearing digs at coaches and national team members by Mothers of competitors. It just smacks of good sportsmanship and the legitimacy of the governing body.

jenJ,
That poster on horse-Canada (Lee Breakey) is the same person who threw shade all over Iain Gilmour and others when Clayton’s and Jorge’s conflicts of interest and abuse of their positions at EC were first becoming public knowledge. Lee seems to think very highly of his or her inside knowledge of Canada’s top eventers but if you ask me (and nobody did!) he/she needs some lessons in the use of the comma before I’m going to start taking their words of warning directed at Canada’s team riders seriously.

Here is the link to the old thread featuring the previous breakdown in Breakey communication…

I think you’re talking about 4 of Jessie’s former students? I think you’re right in that their riding has improved - and people are free to choose who they want to be their coaches - but again this is taking clients away from paying into the Canadian system. It’s just so sad that we got someone who has no interest in building anything other than his own empire. We have such a great group of people in Canada who did so well with just a bit of committed training and attention.

On another note, the EC convention is taking place in Vancouver (where I now live). I wonder if an open letter calling for the President’s resignation due to conflicts of interest would be in order? I mean, he’s suing one of Canada’s most promising eventers and now owning horses for another country’s WEG hopeful. Surely there’s a case here! Anyone???

I would totally support that letter!!
Moreover, I would totally support a letter calling for his resignation AND promising to withhold my EC yearly fees until this happens. I know at least 50 EC members who are willing to do the same so anyone wanting to move forward with this let me know!

We need to make ourselves heard; I couldn’t agree more. I doubt the president is going to resign, he doesnt seem to have the same moral code we do. So, it will need to be forced. I am going to look up how to get that done. Anyone want to help? I just attended my province’s horse trials AGM and there is some support but the PTB seemed not too interested. Members were at least mad about the conflicts and misuse of their membership fees. Education and a call to action are required.

I would also suggest discussing this situation with Sport Canada, the COC and Athletes CAN. This discussion needs to go over the heads of EC because the problems and corruption at EC are so extensive.

A draft letter sent out to members might encourage more people to click and send, with a space for personal comment…or some people will find they will write something inappropriate.

I probably would not sign such a letter as I would feel like I was bandwagon hopping since I’m not completely up on our own organization - learned all I know here on COTH…would depend on the wording. Just requesting an enquiry, maybe.

My eventing career started in the seventies in the happy-go-lucky days and ended a few years ago with the mother of my current saddle horse.

Can you email me at elizabethannehay@gmail.com. I am part of a group of people at the grass roots working on change. Would love to hear what you have to say about EC.

there you have it…Torchy holds a lot of power.

I think we should contact CBC on the issues with EC. They always love a good story of corruption and the people.

Can anyone with more detailed information on the stories above send me details either via pm or email me, jealoushe@gmail.com. I’ll get the ball rolling. I have had good luck in the past with them exposing things.

Thanks eahay!

I believe eahay also has good media contacts.

FYI – the COC is hosting the annual NSF Leadership Summit this week in Ottawa.

That’s basically a COC annual meeting where each NSF sends a rep to the conference and various details of sport feds and funding are talked about. It’s a good opportunity for NSFs to exchange info and talk to the COC.

The EC rep going to the event is Eva Havaris.

(No idea who that is but someone sent me the participant list so I thought I’d pass the info along.)

May I ask, are you by chance Elizabeth Hay, author?
I’m wondering, what is the process to electing/appointing the EC president? I’m surprised there isn’t dissension in the ranks there, though it may be too quiet to hear. He is not putting EC in a good light, There has to be at least some board members that want him gone.
EC members choose the Board. Board chooses the Officers (so, President/Vice President).
Just remember - under old Bylaws, each PTSO and/or Sport License Holder got 1 vote.
Somehow (I will NEVER understand why), that membership agreed to go to the current Bylaws, where there are 27 members and the rest of us are simply “Participants” with no vote. There are 9 members that represent Provinces/Territories, 9 that represent Sport and 9 that represent “national organizations”… they hold the vote. And somehow those groups seem to handpick their members.
