Free Jump Stirrup Leathers

Love the stirrups - really kind to my arthritic ankles and I love that they are safety stirrups. The leathers however are not so great - the D between the single leather and the adjustable upper twists and changes the length enough to be annoying. I also don’t like that you cant run them up. Has anyone tried them with traditional leathers? I’ll probably try this tomorrow but thought I’d check in advance in case it’s a waste of time to do so…

I had that happen with one pair and sent that pair back. They sent me a new pair for free, no questions asked beyond my explanation that the D was rubbing my saddle, which it was. The D in the second pair is sewn in a lot tighter. It also has a sticky high tech grippy pad Velcro-ed to the inside. You might have the older model.

I love the stirrups and like the leathers. I cross them over the top of my saddle when I get off which has been working fine. But I do wish I could run them up. I haven’t ridden with them in regular leathers but some people do. They don’t run up in those either, they aren’t stable enough at the top – I did try that before I gave up attempting it. Maybe if you roll the leather around the bottom or something.

I have had the free jump stirrups for at least 7 years and have used them with traditional leathers no problem. They don’t stay run up well, but I just kind of wrap the leather around the stirrup bar and its works pretty good

I was hoping to hear more from people who have used these stirrup irons and leathers. I hope My comment will bump this up and give me some more data before I buy

I use these irons with regular leathers. LOVE the stirrups! Have not tried the FreeJump leathers; I have had no problems with traditional leathers.

I agree that it’s annoying that they don’t stay run up well, but it’s not a big deal to me. I cross them over my saddle, or lately I’ve just been taking the stirrups off and keeping them in my tack trunk with my helmet.

Mine are in regular leathers, I take them off after each ride and they live in my tote with my tendon boots etc. my daughter has them but her leathers are so short there’s no need to take them off or even run them up really.

I use them with regular leathers and like the others take them off after each ride as I don’t want them to damage the saddle by crossing them over. I do miss how neat it looks to have stirrups run up but I love these stirrups so much. I would recommend unbuckling the stirrup leather and sliding them off of the buckle, versus twisting them off through the loop in the stirrup (I was doing this, but it looked like it was starting to damage my lined leathers, if you have thin unlined leathers you should be fine).

Let me be a mild dissenting voice. I do not hate these stirrups, but do not love them either. The fact that you can’t run them up is a huge pain. And they make my ankles sore if I ride a lot of horses in them. I have always used them with normal stirrup leathers.

I use them with regular leathers and love them. I’m considering the new version

Wondering if anyone has tried them? I’m curious if they will stay up more comfortably. I’ll admit I like that they are a little more traditional looking even if I compete in the anything goes jumper ring.

Freejump just came out with new leathers. They’re great

You can slide the open black outside bar through the leather or the ring on the leathers. Or flip them over and try not to get hit in the face putting your saddle away

To hold them up hook the stirrup through the leather. Basically turn the stirrup upside down and put the leather through the gap. You can’t roll them up as such.

I will say I had these stirrups and everyone in the barn had them too. However after three seperate incidents directly related to these stirrups that caused bad knee injuries due to the stirrups not releasing the foot and the other where the leather snapped over a fence resulting in a bad fall, we all got rid of them. I also know others that had incidents with them.

I loved how my knees which would get sore in other stirrups didn’t get sore. But Because of this experience I can’t recommend them. There other ones that are good for knee issues that I haven’t heard lots of issues with.

just my two cents
