I’ve got bad arthritis in my knees and am looking to get different stirrups …have been using Compositi and Royal Riders but knees are starting to bother me again …are the Free Jump Stirrups & Leathers really worth the hefty price tag …and are they game changers for comfort and leg stability ?? I would need the hunter version …are they the same comfort & function wise as the Pro version ?? …also been seeing ads for Stability Stirrups leathers made by Total Saddle Fit…any input on those ??
I have Free Jump stirrups and the Total Saddle Fit stability leathers. I like both, but neither were game changers for me. Free Jump stirrups feel a little better than the Composti ones I had before. And I think the Stability Stirrup leathers help stabilize my leg a little, but I might just be buying into their ads.
I love my free jump stirrups and tell everyone I know to get them. They stay angled across my foot better and overall keep me a heck of a lot happier than any other stirrups. And that is the end of my ability to be helpful to you, lol! I’ve never been able to ride in the usual knee-pain-go-to of jointed stirrups (I sprain my bad ankle in them when the fences get big enough), and while I can say that my knees are definitely happier in the Free Jumps than in regular fillis stirrups, I can’t address much about the difference between FJ and jointed stirrups specifically for knee pain.
And then I have them on regular old stirrup leathers, so I can’t address whether the FJ stirrup leathers (or TSF leathers) are worth it. I’ve never thought my leg wasn’t stabilized by plain old stirrup leathers. Curious to hear what others say though…might make me think about trying them since I have a saddle that needs new stirrup leathers anyway.
I’m happy with my freejumps. I have them in CWD leathers that are supposed to stabilize you leg. I find them super comfortable, even better that the buckle is at the bottom so there’s no bulk at the top.
I tried them for a while and they didn’t do it for me. I much prefer the Lorenzinis, that being said I had normal leathers, so with the stability leathers it may have been better. They felt great but my leg swung back and my leg never swings. So I sold them and went back to the Lorenzinis. So far, I feel like I have tried every stirrup and the Lorenzinis are by far my favourite.
I went from Royal Rider to MDC to Lorenzini before I landed on FreeJump and they’ve 110% been the best ones for me. I have the Soft’Up with regular stirrup leathers. My knees and ankles are terrible, and while the other stirrups all helped, the FJ are the only ones that have managed to almost entirely eliminate the aches and pains. I also really like the weight and grippiness of them. I was a reluctant convert, but now I’m definitely a convert none-the-less!
That said, I do think that stirrups can be a pretty individual thing and I’d urge you to see if you can arrange a trial pair before you buy.
Thank you to everyone for all your responses …luckily there is a tack store not too far away where I can take the Free Jump Stirrups on trial! I’m intrigued by the TSF Stability leathers …anything that could alleviate some pain is worth it in my opinion (plus they guarantee you will love them or they will pay shipping both ways if you don’t)…I’m struggling with a weak right leg/calf/ankle since having a bad herniated disc and recent back surgery so anything that might help is worth a try if they really help …as with most things Horse they are just very expensive
Definitely give them a trial; try to do a few rides in a row if possible. I was given a set by someone who bought the wrong size. First ride was okay, by ride #3 I was feeling crippled by knee, ankle and back pain. The angles were not right for me at all!
I have a friend (actually the person I bought my Free Jumps from) who has a really bad knee. She said when she originally bought the Free Jumps, they were amazing, had no issues with her knee. Then, about a month in, her knee was becoming irritated again. She couldn’t figure out if she was doing something different suddenly, or what. She ended up trying the Schockemohle Titanio Stirrups and has been using them for over a year with no knee issues.
