Freezing Wet Dog Food?

I am going to play around with topping Dexter’s food with wet food. It might take me as long as 6 or 7 days to get through a can which is too long for the fridge. Is it safe to open the can, separate it into chunks, individually wrap, and freeze?

I don’t see why it should.

But you could by smaller cans? Unless of course you already get the mighty dogs size…

Yep. If I go away for a weekend and leave the cat by himself, I freeze a couple of cans of food on saucers for a couple of days. Then when I leave, I put out the frozen food. It thaws out in a while for eating and stays fresh for a good 24/30 hours.

Awesome. I only need 2-3 tb to top his food and most of the premium wet food only comes in the monster sized cans.

Freezing is fine. I go through a can every 5-6 days, though, and never had issues with it keeping if you use a can cover. People food in an airtight container lasts a week, so dog food shouldn’t be any different.

I stuff my dog’s kongs with canned dog food and freeze them until I’m ready to give them to him. I can pre-stuff several at a time, plus they last longer once I give them to him.

That’s a great idea. Right now I have to keep wet food special (it’s the only way he consistently eats) but if he ever decides to like normal things like peanut butter, pumpkin, eggs, etc. then I will definitely make frozen kongs.

You can also top food with dehydrated dog food from the Honest Kitchen. It makes like a gravy and doesn’t need to be refrigerated/frozen. I found it a whole lot easier to use than cans. 2 tablespoons and a 1/4-1/3 cup water mixed in with the dry made for a happy pup.

Honest Kitchen might be a good mix, as Snowflake already mentioned. My dog loves Stella and Chewy’s freeze-dried dinner patties. You can take a half or quarter patty and break it up over the food. The patties do not need to be refrigerated, and I have not met a dog that does not LOVE them.
