Frequent (!) urination.

7 times in 1 hour!!! And has gone through 1/2 bucket of water in cool weather. this AM. I was able to collect some urine from time #4 but it looks pretty clear. I will take it to the vet’s any way to see if it can be of diagnostic use.

For those who saw my earlier post on breathing problems, this is not the 29 year old, but it is the 16 year old who has/had heaves and after 2 surgeries (tieback and laser), That was many years ago and now he able to jump around 1 course before making a sound. But today is (incredible but true) a cool day.

Any suggestions?

PS: Man who works for me just came in and said Petey has pee’d 2x more since I came in. That is 9 times in 2 hours. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Both urine and blood are being tested as I type. It is either crystals (good news — curable with Vit. c) or bad news, kidney problems

The only horse I’ve known over the years that had this symptom was an elderly horse that was prone to kidney stones. It was a while ago, so I don’t remember how they diagnosed it (ultra sound, urine sample, or what).

Edited to add - now that I think about it, maybe it was bladder stones. My mind is a bit fuzzy on where they came from. Anyway, regardless of where they are formed, when they break up or pass, they can irritate the urethra, and hence, the frequent urination or dribbles.

I’d also wonder about bladder stones. Scoping the bladder is not very costly (IIRC) and may be useful

I’ve also seen horses that are low grade colicking pee a lot. They’re not super painful, but uncomfortable enough to keep stretching and draining the bladder to try to get more comfortable. Good idea to keep an eye on the pooping!

My horse did this after getting vaccines. In addition to having a fever, he kept stretching out to urinate. It was odd. Vet said that sometimes they do strange things related to fever or pain. The horse was fine about 1.5 hours after an oral dose of bute. Hope you find your answer soon!

Pony mare started peeing a lot but we didn’t think much of it - she was getting older, etc. When she started peeing pink we knew something was really wrong. Egg sized bladder stone.

Has he had any medications lately? NSAIDs or any herbs/natural supplements of similar type? Good you are testing blood and urine. Mine went through a period of kidney stress recently after 2 normal sized doses of Banamine, over 24 hrs apart.

If the kidneys are stressed, then it’s good for him to keep drinking. You may want to cut back any extraneous calcium or protein from the diet while you wait on the results.

No meds of any kind… He stays out with the other horses at night (they go crazy if confined 24/7), and love the grass. So it is hard to get a fresh sample of urine. If I try to keep him in alone, he goes crazy. Yes I could bring them all in and sit in a stall with a bottle, but, bBetween the first post and now, my wonderful dog, Moose. died, so for right now Petey has slid to the back burner. His kidneys are fine, The urine sample is inconclusive, but I will talk to the vet about adding Vit C to his diet…

I will check back here when my world has become real again.

So very sorry to hear about your dog Moose. Sending you a virtual {{{{hug}}}}.
