Fridays Royal Ascot - HM The Queen savors victory!

The Queen’s runner comes up short in the PoW Stakes.

The 10th Group 1 stakes win by So You Think in Wednesday’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot was part of a family day for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

His son Joseph won his first career race at Royal Ascot aboard So You Think, who won by 2 1/4 lengths as the 4-5 favorite, edging Carlton House, owned by the Queen of England.

Thursday - “Ladies Day” at Royal Ascot after a night of heavy rains and likely some light raining during the card.

The Middletons (although not accompanied with Pippa or the Duchess of Cambridge) are invited guests today of the Royal family. The Queen is wearing a light greenish colour.

Race 2 is the Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2) for fillies with #2 being Momentary, ridden by Haley Turner for HRH The Queen.

Today’s big race is the 3rd race - at 2 1/2 miles the Gold Cup (Group 1)

As indicated on the TVG coverage the fashion rules have been tightened up for 2012 - proper attire to be enforced and those failing are tapped upon the shoulder and ‘removed’.

What is not allowed includes the fascinator hat. Which was all the rage by the Royals no less last year with assorted weddings

Here is the actual style guide that must be adhered to in the Royal Enclosure - replete with photo samples.

The Guardian’s live blog coverage

Amazing effort by Reckless Abandon in the 1st race - green as the grass he ran on. Zig, zag and sideways and seemingly out of the race along the rail then boom runs back like mad to take the win. He must be very talented to recover from giving up so much ground.

Woot woot! Princess Highway wins the Ribblesdale!

Frankie was lucky to say the least when you watch the head-on in the stretch. However England is not as frequent to take down numbers unless they are outright convinced the interfered horse would’ve have won.

I cannot find on youtube the Norfolk Stakes reply (with Reckless) although video of the press conference is up - with perhaps the most soft spoken jockey I’ve ever barely heard with a mic right by his mouth

Final entries for Saturday’s Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Note that amongst the runners taking on Black Caviar (#11) is a George Strawbridge Jr runner of Moonlight Cloud (#12)

Just a tiny bit of trivia

The filly that was sadly scratched at the gate, GivemylovetoRose, is a line from a song written by an old favorite of mine, John Prine. The song is called Please don’t bury me, and it is on his second album, over 30 years old!

A great run - despite the bumping - in the King Edward VII Stakes: going to Thomas Chippendale! A very close third place goes to the Augustin Stables runner of ‘Thought Worthy’ with Frankie up.

Friday’s 4th race (Wolferton Stakes) will have a Ramsey horse, Augustin horse, as well as a slew Godolphin runners.

The 5th race ‘Queen’s Vase’ ironically will have a runner for The Queen - #12 Estimate (IRE)

An aside but it was a bit odd that TVG is using so much music between races … two Madonna songs in their entirety earlier …

Congrats to George Strawbridge Jr /Augustin Stables on the victory with his runner Gatewood (William Buick up) winning the Wolferton Handicap!

Win for The Queen!!

First victory since 2008 by Her Majesty’s stable. She takes the Queen’s Vase!

Estimate the Irish bred filly wins by many lengths in a strong victory in the 5th race, Queen Vase.

Plenty of cheers for HRH and Ryan Moore (jockey) and trainer Sir Michael Stoute. In her violet color of the day she has quite a big smile for the win in the winners circle.

For those wondering The Queen didn’t present the Queen’s Vase to herself rather her husband, Prince Phillip, was presenting the hardware to the connections

The Queen was able to celebrate her first Royal Ascot winner since 2008 courtesy of Estimate who landed the Queen’s Vase in fine style under Ryan Moore.

The daughter of Monsun was the subject of solid market support beforehand and the 3-1 favourite went to the front two furlongs out.

She soon put the race to bed, storming clear under the former champion jockey to win by five lengths.

Regarding The Queen’s racing victories at Royal Ascot - per The Guardian’s blog entry:

That’s 21 at Royal Ascot for the Queen as an owner. She had Free Agent in the 2008 Chesham but that was her first winner at the meeting since 1999. It used to be like shelling peas for the monarch, who had 11 in the 1950s.

Great win! Did they say that she had just broken her maiden and then run here?

Great win! Did they say that she had just broken her maiden and then run here?[/QUOTE]

Yep. She had just two prior starts: off the board in her first start of Sep 6, 2011, then victory May 6, 2012 and off to Ascot.

Video: Estimate’s victory (partial) and owner HRH The Queen of England

She watched the victory with Sheik Mo.

For all of her Jubilee activities I think you see her the happiest there getting the trophy (presented is not a vase) from her hubby, The Duke

Hrumph;
She is Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (and many other places)
Her racing colours are; jacket with a purple body, scarlet sleeves and gold braiding, and black velvet cap with a gold fringe. ( the same as those of King George IV and King Edward VII.)
