Fridays Royal Ascot - HM The Queen savors victory!

Finally the biggest day is upon us - Saturday the conclusion with ‘the wonder from down under’ taking center stage: Black Caviar.

(pdf) Saturday’s past performances for all the race cards at Ascot

Most likely extra unloved after I’ll Have Another was sold but Paul Reddam has a runner in race 1 - Frege.

Race 2 has Augustin Stables/Geo. Strawbridge Jr’s Aiken (winner of 6 from 7 lifetime) looking to be a champion

Race 3 - the Diamond Jubilee Stakes - is the centerpiece with Black Caviar. Although Augustin’s Moonlight Cloud could make it an honest race.

Race 5 will have everyone’s favorite despot “president”, Ramzan Kadyrov, leader of Chechnya, with Bobbyscot. He very well might be there unlike what we’ve seen with attempts to run his horses in the US.

Race 6 will see Formula One’s leading owner Bernie Eccelstone with hopes in Petara Bay.

Bernie’s in Valencia.

She’s probably not at her best given the travel, softer footing than she’s ever been on, etc? I find the ride she had the thing that wasn’t impressive

So -whats yer point ?

The victory on Friday by US-based owner George Strawbridge Jr’s was his first at Ascot. Although for the five days he had several runners in the money. Oddly you hear nary a peep really in the US racing press as to his success. TVG did an interview with Ken Ramsey, even though his runners all finished nearly dead last, yet no George.

The Wolferton Stakes won by his homebred Gatewood

Strawbridge, who was enjoying his first Royal Ascot success, laughed: “Breeding racehorse is a little like chicken and feathers – most of the time you end up with feathers.”

While George was enjoying success at Ascot (he had a couple of 2nd place horses too) - back in the States the same day there was this: as noted by Graham Motion’s stable:

Although Beatnik ran second [Friday night] at Presque Isle Downs (wow, is he consistent), the chart jumped out at me for the breeder of the first, second and third horses. Don’t think I’ve seen it before!

Breeders: 6 - George Strawbridge Jr. (PA); 1A - George Strawbridge Jr. (PA); 1 - George Strawbridge Jr. (PA); He also owned the second and third horses.

Don’t think it got mentioned, but the Willie Mullins trained Simenon pulled off a unique double. On opening day he won the 2m4f Ascot Stakes, then followed that up 4 days later by winning the 2m5f Queen Alexandra Stakes on Saturday, the last race of the meeting, by a comfortable 7 lengths.
Quite a feat for the 5yo.

As part of the BBC’s coverage, Claire Balding did an interview with Strawbridge in the paddock prior to the Diamond Jubilee.

It’s a shame that wasn’t repeated on TVG or Simon could’ve pulled him in for a few moments. To think 2012 will be the last year the BBC will carry Ascot.

May I be permitted to post a correction to the title of this thread?

The Queen is HM (Her Majesty).

HRH is applied to princesses and princes.
