Friesan People - Help Please

I have a client looking to purchase a Friesan stallion as their foundation stud. They want opinions on their short listed stud however I am very clueless when it comes to Friesans, their breeding permits and classifications.

Can someone give me a good idea on this boy?

His bloodlines and basically anything else I can pass onto them

Why did they ask you your opinion about it? (Just because you stated knowing nothing about friesians)

This stallion doesn’t seem to be for sale, are they looking for importing/buying breedings?

What is their mare(s) pedigree?

ETA: Where are they located?

They wanted my opinion about him as a dressage horse which I have no problems with. However they wanted to dig a little further into his breeding and other things which is where I stumble on. However I did tell them I would look into it for the best of my ability and recommended they also ask around for someone else more knowledgeable on Friesan bloodlines.

They are in Australia, as am I.

And just because something isn’t advertised openly for sale it doesn’t mean that it is.

They’ll be purchasing broodmares in the near future and I’m unsure of what they’re looking at. I’ve only been asked for my opinion on this horse.

If they are just starting out buying horses then really they should put the money into good broodmares and import semen from an APPROVED breeding stallion.

Where is your client located? Are they in Australia (where this particular stallion is located)? One huge question for them is, what types of horses are they looking to produce? Purebreds or crosses? What registry do they plan on using? If breeding purebreds is the goal, they need to realize that having a Friesian stallion “approved” for breeding with the FPS is like hitting the Powerball. And my guess is that the FPS is probably the only game in town in Australia.

The bloodlines are very good. However, it looks like this stallion was born in 2001. One thing to keep in mind is that Friesian stallions overall have poor fertility, and it worsens even more as they age. This guy is already over 10 years old, so may not have many years left of usable fertility.

ETA – about the pedigree. He’s by a Preferant stallion out of a Preferant mare, and is himself a Star stallion. Doesn’t get much better pedigree-wise.

He’s very nice looking. The only other registry option for approval would be FPZV, the German registry, but I have no idea if they have a presence in Australia or not. Have them check out the Australian KFPS, as I see he is registered with them and look into the stallion approvals and see if that is something they want to get involved in. They test things like temperament, xrays, semen quality and riding, conformation etc.
