My yearling house/ barn kittie consistently gets his monthly dose of Frontline on the back of neck as directed and STILL gets ticks, the little tiny scary deer tick type, made scarier bc he sleeps w/ me, all around his eyes and ears where the hair is thin. Why isn’t the topical tick preventive working to deter these ? Anyone else used anything better ? More worried about ticks than fleas. I did try Advantage last year and didn’t think it worked as well. Pls help !
The ticks and fleas aren’t killed until they get on the pet. Therefore, you will see the live tick/flea and then it will die.
Sarah’s right, they have to bite the pet before they die. I prefer the spray on frontline, it seems to prevent the ticks from getting on in the first place.
spray on frontline ?
I have the spray on Frontline for dogs which my vet has me using on the horses legs. Would this be safe to use on the cat ? What about him licking it when grooming ? Where do I spray it - back of neck like the monthly ? Appreciate all the advice !
Alas, Frontline doesn’t really do much to kill ticks…
still waiting for the day they invent a sure-proof cat-safe tick product

Just as an FYI, Advantage has no tick protection.
I found that too much of the cat-sized dose didn’t penetrate the coat to reach the skin, which is why I figured it didn’t work well enough. I actually used 1 1/2 doses on our outside (feral) cat and it seems to do the trick. Obviously you may find a dying tick on them (since it requires them to bite the animal to be killed), but we find that Frontline works very well for the dogs and cats - if you get enough of the product onto the skin. We are in tick heaven, and it seems to be the best we can find.
It’s true, Frontline is the best product out there – but it is not perfect.
I still pick those little tiny nymphs off of my cat’s faces whenever they come in from outside…some are dead, some are not.
The problem with cats and ticks is that most of the things that will kill ticks will also kill cats Frontline Plus is the only option that I am aware of.
You can try putting it some place with less hair but they will prob lick it off. That is the reason for putting it on the back of their neck. If cat is ammenable, you could shave a spot of hair off where you put it?
The product uses the sebaceous glands of the skin to provide coverage to the entire pet, but the face/head area doesn’t have as many, which is why cats will still get ticks on their faces.
