Frost free hydrant problems - unable to raise handle

One of the problems with my hydrant was that the handle would not stay down completely no matter what I did. I had to put a snap into the hole of the handle but it still wouldn’t hold it down completely. Which meant that the water was not pushed back down far enough. The problem is getting workers who know what they are doing when getting things installed. All my contractors, electric, plumbing etc have retired and it is difficult finding reliable help.

The only time I have seen this is the hydrant’s handle is not correctly adjusted, there is an adjustment screw on the side of the handle that allows you to adjust the thrust of the rod connected to the handle that extends down the stand tube to the seal at the bottom of the hydrant. With the rod’s length being adjusted too long it will not allow the handle to click over to the lock closed position

Yes, that ^.

There is a rubber bullet at the bottom of the rod the handle lifts and pushes down.

Your rod may be adjusted where it can’t quite keep the bullet seated properly to keep water from seeping in the pipe?

Or the rubber is defective and is not closing tight?

Bluey and Clanter I guess next spring I will try to find someone that knows what they are doing to see if they can fix this. I had the original guy back several times initially but he couldn’t seem to fix it. I am now down to four horses from ten so am currently not using that barn. The four that I have are in my bank barn where I don’t have water problems. Also have a nice hot water tank in there which is so handy in the winter.

I don’t know why I never thought of this! Even when replacing plungers in the middle of summer, it takes an act of God or the hulk to screw off those heads. facepalm
